A Shmup made of... chalk?

News Details

From time to time the oversaturated genre of Shoot 'em ups recieves some great astonishing titles with incredible graphics, gameplay, or soundtrack. and this is one that combines all of 'em. Chalk by Joakim Sandberg, its one of these. It has managed to wholly reclaim the side-scrolling shoot ‘em up genre with unique graphics, innovative game play and bold individualism.

Using the keyboard to control the girl, manoeuvring her out of danger, you use the mouse (a piece of chalk) to draw a line. This line of chalk has many different properties, such as the ability to destroy enemies. Usually, a game like this will have you blasting away at the enemy until they are no more. Fortunately, a game like this is also unique. Each enemy has a minimum of two points on its body which destroy the enemy if a continuous, unbroken line is drawn between the points. Other enemies will need to be destroyed by drawing a line between their bullets and their own ships.

The chalk line is limited in how long it can be, but there is no limit to how many times, or how frequently you can use it. At times acting as your primary weapon, the chalk line can also be drawn as a shield between you and enemy fire. The nuances and details in the game are many and will require frequent re-visits in order to conquer fully. A wholly enjoyable game which you should be enjoyed by anyone with a taste for originality.

I really liked it. It's the first shmup that when I played it for the first time, I did not actually die within the first minute. Also, cute graphics and pretty decent music.

Yeah this has been out for a while.  Can't say I like it.  Graphics style is decent but I don't like the controls at all.

Ages old, but still awesome. The engine allows for fairly easy tricks to avoid it being really hard, but I still love how creative the idea is. It was great to play with my tablet.

Sounds like it should be a DS game... Or is one? Try Yoshi's Island. Either way its a good game and deserves props.
