WIP wip WIP
Hey everybody! I thought that it would be interesting to see how others are pixelling, step by step. I'm quite curious how you people start, compose and color your pixels. That said it might be interesting for others too... so I aswell might start this. Please don't think that's some kind of arrogant attitude from me. If you don't care just don't answer to this thread and I'll cease to post further steps :) My intention is to "vitalize" and deepen the wip section somehow and also put some focus on the very beginning of a pixelpiece and topics that are not pixel-only but still essential for the end-result (like composition and colorselection). Ok ok ok I should stop talking and get to the point right? Ok, I'll show you 2 steps this time to explain some progress and tell you some of my thoughts (regarding this piece): STEP 1: ![]() Ok now you see why I will show you 2 steps at once right. The first step is just one very raw doodle and you can hardly tell what is going on there. What you can see is that I decided myself for some borderthing left and right. Also the pic is overlapping that border one the left side. That's intended and will serve as an "entry point" to the picture... well at least I hope I can compose it so that this will work. There isn't much more to tell about this step. It is meant to be an harbour but this will become clearer later (I hope :) ) STEP 2: ![]() I've actually redrawn everything in this step. I've worked from the shapes most far (or is it something like farest?) away to the foreground shapes. It is still all very vague and sketchy. The composition is not finalized yet but I'm getting closer. Also don't worry there will be color but I decided against coloring it already because the colorselection would take too much time. Especially when I'm not done with the composition I don't know what shades I would need... I did this step and the first one with 2x zoom. I'll zoom in more later of course when I'll get to the details but so far it isn't needed... Some thoughts: I'm trying hard to get away from the habit of going into details at the very beginning. Not only does it slow me down but I'll also often realize mistakes in proportions and compository lacks often too late to change quickly. Now when I remain sketchy I'm much more flexible when I'm working. This is not only true for pixel pushing but for painting too... --------------- Those two steps took me about half an hour. I know it's not much yet and hopefully I can drop the next step here soon (although it might take some time since I'm busy with multiple things right now). So again if you don't care for the steps just don't drop by and I'll let the threat die. I would be very interested how you begin your pixels, your progress and your thoughts regarding it... Awesome dude. You definitely have a unique style among the pixellers... great to see how your scenes come to life. Step 2 is already taking great shape. |

Ya, it looks great already. Sadly, I'm not talented enough to scribble with such precision

Oh, I surely agree about watching someone's process of how they make a piece. It's definately one of my favorite things. :D
Looking forward to updates on this! :D |

Ok this is more of a step-between or the director's cut
![]() First I didn't wanted to show you this step because I'm not ... pleased with it - not at all. But then why not - missteps belong to the process of picture-creating too! I tried some colors and played around with it - so far only the right upper corner goes in the right direction. Everything else will be changed radically... STEP 2.5: ![]() As you can see I actually pixel everything over and will continue so until I decide for my colors and last composition changes... Hopefully I can show you more tomorrow... (oh and this took me maybe about 15 min) Edited by Niss |

STEP 3:
![]() It's not much more than a colored version of the sketch from step 2. But I'm getting closer color-wise and the next step will be much less sketchy - promised ![]() This step took me astonishingly long! While I love the color selection process it is also the one I struggle most with... Damn I've got to return to work but I'll promise to write more next time (when there's more to say too). Thank's for all the interest from you so far and I hope to see some detail creation process from you too! |

the sketchy ness is quite cool, u shood continue to color it, but also submit a sketchy and see which gets rated higher.

STEP 4:
![]() I've finished the back-BACKground layer. Well maybe I will finetune it later when the rest is done too... Forget what's happening in the foreground for now that's all still undecided. I used quite a lot of AA which is rather unusual for me but I desired a very smooth look for this part. I dropped this in on you because it showas very well how I work - and that's what this is all about right? As you can see I changed some parts to modify the composition and probably will continue so. Some side notes: I'm using GraphicsGale for this. I'm not using any layers. I use frames to seperate the different steps in one file and every frame has it's own palette |

Me too, and loving it.
I'm at work right now, and really not nearly proficient enough to post anything WiP that would help us all along, but why don't some of the better pixellers in here post steps of their WiPs in here, too? That's what the thread is supposed to do, isn't it? Thanks in advance. |
