Hello,
This is my first post on this forum so please correct me if I did something wrong. I've made myself an avatar, but before I upload it to the gallery I want to post it here to see if there is still room for improvement. I've worked on this piece for quite a long time and it has evolved into different versions with different styles. The pixelling style of the first version of my avatar was inspired by this piece in the gallery: http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/23276.htm I also used reference pictures for my work. Mainly this one: http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww98/Pixelledfox/fox3.jpg But most help was by looking at my dog. Here is the first version of my avatar: ![]() And a small work in progress image: ![]() I think it's hard to see in this image exactly how I work, but maybe there are some comments on how I could have done it better? Should I not try to work with such a rough base next time and try to make a detailed outline first, or not? It works for me when I'm drawing, but maybe it's a bit unnecessary when pixelling. I thought that version looked pretty good, but it still felt a bit out of place and lacked the effect I wanted it to have. Then I used an older version and worked with a different kind of style. I think it's style is a bit inspired by a piece I've seen in the gallery a long time ago, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, here it is: (+ an alternative version) ![]() ![]() And the work in progress image: ![]() I'm planning to upload it to the gallery soon so I have an avatar for the time being. I think this piece doesn't really look like an avatar and suits being a standalone piece more, but I'll stick with this one until I make a new one. Comments and Critique are very appreciated. ![]() |

Looks bigger than 64x64 and it looks pretty good, try adding some shading to it.
Thats all I can see now that needs changing.

Didn't know the avatar restriction was 64x64 here, but that's not a big problem, I made a modified version that I can use as an avatar: ![]() ![]() (maybe the AA on the name is a bit overdone?) I can use this as the preview picture in the gallery and use it as my avatar. As for the shading, I don't think shading (or dithering) will fit the style I'm going for here, I'm trying to go with this kind of style: http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/787.htm?sec=icons&pg=1 But of course with my own style mixed into it. I think shading really benefits most pieces, but I'm going for a very basic clean look. Nonetheless, I did try to apply a bit of shading to it, to make it look a little less flat. I did some shading all over the body without breaking the style. Here is the result: ![]() While it's hard to a lot of difference in 1x zoom I still think it's a slight improvement over the old version ![]() Does anyone else have critique? Or is it good enough to upload? Edited by PixelledFox - 22 December 2008 at 12:16pm |

It is amazingly awesome :)
My feelings say it needs a longer nose, but you can only check that by viewing some pictures of foxes. Furthermore I really like this style :) |

I like where this is going :) Lovin' the colour choices
I think the left half of the fox is a bit boring at the moment though, nothing wrong with the shape/anatomy (I think!) but I feel like it's missing a bit of volume or bushiness. My idea of a fox might be a bit skewed though :P ![]() Does that image illustrate the volume thing well enough? Also, this doggy by Panda is a great example of fur while keeping things flat, might be of interest. Keep it up! :D |

Furthermore I really like this style :) I'm happy to hear people like it :). I'm still trying to perfect it, but I think I got the basic style down. About the nose, the length of the nose greatly depends on what kind of fox you are looking at. I'll provide some examples: Here are 2 pictures with foxes with a nose shorter than usual: http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww98/Pixelledfox/1225336339080.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww98/Pixelledfox/1225341358166.jpg And here you can see an example of a fox with a longer nose: http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww98/Pixelledfox/fox1.jpg I think most foxes have longer noses than the one in the piece I'm working on, so I can certainly see why you think it should be a bit longer. But I personally think a short nose suits this piece better because it makes it look more cute. I think that's because a short nose is a characteristic of infant foxes (like big eyes). I think that's because I don't use much variety in color on the back. I was not really planning on doing so, but maybe it really does make it look better, I'll try that out. I think the lack of volume is missing because I used short haired foxes as reference (great for anatomy). But I really like the idea of making the fur have a bit more volume. I'll try to work on that. I don't want it to get too fluffy though! That image by Panda is fantastic! That's almost exactly the style I was going for. Thanks!Big smile I'm going to use this picture to see what exactly my piece is lacking. Originally posted by volcom One thing....if your name is pixelledfox....you better have on dang awesome avatar of a pixelledfox. ........anyways, looking pretty good. Has a nice style to it. haha, yeah I'll try my best to make it look good! I don't think this will be my final avatar though, I think this will be my temporary avatar until I make a proper one. (planning to make a small animated sprite of a fox) But I'm not going to work on that until this is finished though! Wow, I've worked very long on this piece today, my mind is crazy after sitting so close to the screen for that longCrazy. Although I worked so long I don't think I made much progress though, all my attempts on improving it didn't turn out the way I hoped they would. I did learn alof from it though, so that's a good thing :D. Here is what I came up with: ![]() ![]() I have mixed feelings about this one, although I like how it got thicker lines and a smoother look I do not like how it looks blurry in most parts. ![]() ![]() After that I cut back on the AA and I think it came out pretty nice except for some places. I think I'm going in the right direction with this last version. I can see that it's not perfect yet, but I'm going to study Panda's work to see how I can improve on it. |

I haven't had time to work on this piece for a long time (mainly because of the holidays), but today I found time to work on it again.
Here is the result: ![]() ![]() old new ![]() Avatar So, is it going in the right direction? I quite like the new version, but maybe there is room left for improvement? Any comments and critique before I submit this and move on to an other piece? |

i belive the antialiasing in the outline is a bit overdone, resulting in a rather blurry image. also, at some point that fox head looks more like a deer than a fox. why dont try to give it more volume to that fur? it sure will give it a more organic feel than a vector-ish image.

You may want to take a look at this. This is pretty similar to the style you are going for here. Your peice looks good. The anatomy is fine but could be worked on a bit.
AA is what bothered me the most. You're stacking too many colors on another and it looks a bit blurry. AA only with what you NEED.
I made an edit:
![]() I thought it might be cool if you took it in this direction.
Of course, it is your peice, do what you want with it :)
