I took a crack at spriting Maka Albarn.

changed some stuff:

And some reference

I desperately want to get better. I know the shading is horrible, and I know the hands are horrible, and I know the shoes are horrible. Tell me what to do/do and show me what you did so that I can get better please? Thanks.

the right hand is fine, it doesnt really need to be that complex if you keep everything else simple. what needs to be really adressed is the contrast of the colors: avoid using pure black and then such a warm/light orange for the skin, it feel like the whole legs are hahing from a black ink stain. it doesnt need to be pure black, so you can play with more light tones in order to get a balance in the colors, and get more definition in these shapes(so they wont blend like they do now).  maybe an edit could help, if you allow me of course.

the other day i was listening Soul Eater's Op song. i quite enjoyed it.

I made a couple of changes, like the ones you suggested. If I've got it all wrong, feel free to edit :). Thanks for your help.

its ok. now, i think there's a small isue with the concept. most of the Soul Eater art is based on overdinamic poses and perspectives, often defying the laws of anatomy( :V )

maybe you should attemp to mimic this dinamism and set your character for a more animated pose, away from the usual stiffness of the 3/4 point of view. it wouldn't only be more interesting, but i'm pretty sure the challenge of achieving such thing would boost your skills and the general vibe you're looking for for a fanart of that serie.
