@hyperbear, that looks great!
@Bubu, keep at it, don't give up. @Peelz, it is over dithered, just smooth it out a bit. @ska, wtf o.O |

OH! waaaaaay better.
Maybe the female can be a tree dweller while the male can be a flyer? Your pixelling is a little bit scrappy. Try to just cell clock it instead. You can always add a little bit of scales for texture after if needed. |

Something like this.
Block the areas with solid color areas and then texture over it as a dithering technique but using 'scales' instead of straight out dithering. Notice the toned down whites and reds too. ![]() Also maybe your perspective can be better too. This also shows what I said earlier bout wings on the male. ![]() E: I meant cell block, XD Edited by jalonso - 20 May 2009 at 10:50am |

Wow. That's pretty good. Ok. I see what you mean. It won't come out that good, but I'll work at it.
I haven't put that much work into the male yet. That's why the claws are still white. This is fasinating. Thanks for your help.

Don't be silly. Just place pixels carefully and with care.
Place a pixel and 'stand back' to see if its in the right place. Remember that sometimes its in the right place but the wrong color... ...be patient you still have days to go. |

My weaknesses are the drawing itself and the color choices. Maybe I don't place the pixels as carefully as I should. I tend to try and draw the image with the pixels themselves and then tweak from there. Kind of opposite I know, but I was never an artist.

@ Hyperbear - That new color on the belly does look better...maybe make it's skin bumpy like a toad?
@ Jalonso - I busted out laughing when I saw your blueball crab. People at work looked at me like what the heck's wrong with you...I had to show them, they all enjoyed it. Here's my WIP, don't have a name for it yet... ![]() Edited by darchangel - 20 May 2009 at 7:59pm |

@darchangel: Looks cool so far
![]() @Angel of the Great: Interesting. I'd like to see what you can make out of that if you decide to stick with it. Ok, I tried to cut down the dithering and smooth it over. Something still seems wrong with the midsection though, but I still think it's a step in the right direction. Thoughts? ![]() Edited by Peelz - 21 May 2009 at 12:07am |

![]() Here is my beginnings - Almost finished the lines for the male. I'm really not sure if I will find the time to finish like I didn't last week, I hope so as I really like him so far. I have not really thought about the female except she will have no wings, different pattern and different horns + tail maybe. Or I could give her a hole where the male has his horn.... I have not thought about colors or backgrounds yet either. |

Nice update dpixel. Any chance you'd consider making those wings a bit transparent so that the back of the animal isn't such a 'visual stripe'. Like maybe hint the body underneath just enough to indicate transparency but not too detailed, ya noes?

Bubu, that is coming out fantastic.
Only crit is that it almost looks like it exists. You may think of adding something as you color to make it more fantasy. |

sweet :)
So now you see those very dark pixels where the wings meet the body? They aren't really adding anything and now with transparent wings they actually take away so ditch them. Every so often step back and look at it, it will speak back. Pixel on. Edited by jalonso - 21 May 2009 at 8:06pm |

Rock Insect (Silex Coleoptera)
Males can live anywhere, though usually found in the sea. The males are often adorned with moss, algae and even small sea creatures. They are a dull colour and look like normal pebbles. They have wings but are unable to do more than flutter pathetically.
Females resemble attractive, roughly hewn precious and semiprecious stones, the bright colours of which are used to attract a mate as the females' legs soon become useless under the immense girth of their abdomen. The females have become increasingly rare since humans began to like shiny, pretty things to give to their mates. They are flightless.
I got the idea from a stick insect. Obviously neither is finished, I may add some sort of sea creature to the male's back.

Yeah that's why I said it seemed a pretty dull entry to me. I'd doodled him first and I liked the upside down idea but then by the time I'd done the couple I was thinking "mooooost booooring fantasy animals eeeeverrrrr"... Originally (in the sketch on paper) they had super small upper limbs, and wings tho. ************ Uhm come to think of it... Things I'm contemplating: - adding the wings back in - adding a horn in the forehead - polka-dotted fur Edited by Bubu - 22 May 2009 at 2:40am |

Bubu, maybe you could simply alter the front legs to be just one coming out from the center, a tripod creature???? And leave everything else as is???
I do like the polka-dot idea. |

@ Jal
behold the quick, sneaky edit (from work, whilst on a break, hoping not to be seen, lol) The name I'd given them was Monblions - MONkey Bunny LIONS - still works, MONopaw Bunny LIONS. PS: any problem if I add a puppy to the female's side? I'd made one hang from her tail lol... ![]() |

(dunno if you do pixels as a job or have another job too, I work in a translation agency and sneaking some pixelling in is hard :P) |

I'm glad one person was amused by ms pacman^^
I've made some progress with shading the male (still far from done, I'm unsure about the colors), almost about to start the female lines, just sketched out a cute feme pose. No beard, sabre teeth or wings, 3 tails, 2 horns, i'll give her spots - no stripes. I think they will look enough like the same species and the differences must then be due to gender. If I don't go out this weekend I may finish in time - I am slow and have friends so maybe no. ![]() They are called Nagamaki and were once plentiful, by a highly unlikely* and equally unfortunate coincidence, the intended breeding pair which Noah brought aboard the Arc were gay and lesbian so the species was doomed to extinction. *In a little know Kinsey survey only 8% of the Nagamaki population identified as exclusively homosexual, 33% identified as bi-sexual to some degree, the remaining 58% identified as exclusively heterosexual. Noah did not have access to these survey results. Edited by tripnfelt - 22 May 2009 at 12:18pm |

@Bubu, its cool. I missed it being a scene that goes across even though I think all entries should do that.
@tripnfelt, those poses are funny and work really well. Everything looks great but maybe you could up the contrast a bit the male looks a little washed out even with this level of saturation. |

The idea is clever but not readable. Consider making the 'hull' almost like a jellyfish or something similar, transparent AND glossy. Right now it seems more like one of those 3D stereo images you have to cross your eyes to see...
...do that in pixels and you get my vote ![]() |
