How do you guys find the colors you want to use and their shades?

This has no formula or secret. You must experiment with colors. Look at other's work and study them. You can start out by using someone else's palette then draw something with it and see how shades interact.

the secret formula is a mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

BUT! helm and others monsters of PA use a bit of Chemical X
