I dont know it thats the style you want, but it seems a little too simple. try using more colors, like use a few shades of red in the HP bar, few shades of blue in SP bar, and a few more in the blue boxes.
other than that, not much to comment on yet |

Are you just making a mock-up because you told yourself "I want to make a mock-up!"?
Do you have a goal for this piece, any sketches or drawings, or at least ideas of how you want your finished product to look like in the end? Any specific restrictions (a.k.a designing a game for a certain system) you need to follow? I ask because it looks like you don't have a goal, and are coming up with this spontaneously. While that sometimes works, it usually leads to disappointing results, or causes a lack of motivation to finish after a while, not knowing when you're going to accomplish what you want to accomplish, or simply not knowing what you want to accomplish. This is based on the lack of detail and change of ship. I really think you should gather yourself with this one, and if/when you do, share it with us so we can help you. It's usually hard to assist someone without knowing what direction they're trying to go in. And once you know what you want to do, I'm sure you'll find it a lot easier to create and keep moving, instead of scrapping for ideas, like what to fill the background with. Ask yourself the right questions, and you will provide yourself with answers that will help you move forward when you're stuck. That said, though, the update does look a lot more interesting, and shows more promise. Edited by Dr D - 30 June 2009 at 8:47pm |

Ok, cool thanks for your great words....
I guess my goal for this piece, is to make my best pixel art, and show if i have improved or not... :) I got the idea of doing a mockup because I don't think i can make a portrait or a scene or an iso pa yet... If you see my gallery I'm still a beginner at this and that I've only worked on small pieces, such as fads, challenges, avatars... So I was like maybe start with a mockup? I really am going to work on this real hard and make a cool mockup... Unfortuneatly I don't have enough time or skill to make an actual game, so I'll make a make-believe one, and if the finished product is a success, then maybe later on when I have improved I'll make a game out of it... Here's an edit with the palette and some colouring so far... ![]() I'm planning on dithering the sky and sea, Colouring the palm tree and the little houses in the background. then make a charcter with a wheelbarrow type.. and then the rocks/objects falling from the sky... Thanks Dr D for the comment once again, it really gave me more energy to work on this piece more and made me think more of what I want to do with it... |

I'm all for color conservation, but you may want to use different ramps for the sky and the sea. I think they'll just end up blending together otherwise.

I was bored so i decided to make a edit.
![]() Notice how i took 20 colors and sorta colored the entire picture, while your palette has 22 and you would still need some more colors. When your choosing colors you should work on a mid-tone. Soooo, no saturation and exactly half brightness. that will give you a mid-tone. The reason you wanna work on a mid-tone is because looking at white for too long messes with your ability to distinguish between colors. Next you would choose your color ramps so the green ramp, the blue ramp, and the brown ramp. When your choosing your color ramps keep in mind they are supposed to look like a smooth gradient going from the darkest color to the lightest color but only use a few colors. If possible your color ramps would only contain three colors each, the dark color the light color and the mid-tone that blends them well. After you achieve a good looking color ramp using three colors you would go threw and choose colors that blend the midtone and the dark color well and a color that blends the midtone and the light color well and on and on depending on how many colors you would want in total. I hope that helps...... |

Don't be afraid to mix colors to extend your palette. For example you can use some greens in the water or the sky can use blue and yellow.

Nice work so far.
I have only a few little minor issues so far, though. The buildings on the horizon. If you're seeing something all the way at the horizon (which would probably be very far away?) you probably wouldn't see it in nearly so much detail as you have shown it. In this case, they would probably be a couple of pixels, if even visible at all. However, if you have a tiny planet, then I suppose it could work. ![]() I also really think you should change the sky into a sunset, or differentiate it from the water. To me it's quite unappealing at the moment, and I think making it a sunset would add some much needed warmth and contrast. If you choose your colors wisely, it shouldn't be much of a toll on your color count. You could manage without adding any colors at all, and just adjusting and re-using the ones you already have. I mean, the colors are already there. XD Maybe a bit more purple into the oranges, though. |
