Hey guys :) I suck at introductions.
So, I'm making a pixel Miku (VOCALOID˛) for an art trade, but i realized it'd be more difficult than i thought. I need a lot of critiques and suggestions so i can improve it, specially the hair shading. Note that the red lines are unfinished parts, and that i plan on shading everything. I really don't want to start AAing before i finish everything else. I traced the image (is it allowed?), here's the reference: http://solarblade.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/st_jsgw_f.jpg I also don't want to shade it the exact same way the reference image is. Anyway, here's the WIP: ![]() Also, i might take a looong time to update it, I'm a slow worker ;) I'm sorry for my bad english, but i think you guys can understand it, amirite? P.S.: New word, "wippy". |

First of all, the hair looks fine to me. And her left leg looks dislocated. I don't know if you can trace stuff, but i think it's okay.
Lastly, your english is fine.

Its not ok.
I mean, you can trace stuff, but you cant post them on the gallery. Unless you traced your own work or photo and you tell everyone about it. I think. |

i thought it's the same, it's okay to trace your own work, because it's your own work, but not ok to trace someone elses work, cuz then you just steal their outline.

minipuck: I think thats not his work.
CommanderD97: We should tell him how stuff work. Its not like he's stupid and wont get it or something. He is a newbie, not a kid with special needs =P |

Ok, so i did some searching around the forums, and i found out that it is allowed to trace, as long as the original work is not pixel art and credit is given, and you say thta you traced it.

I suggest more contrast and possibly more saturation in your colors. Also, notice in your reference pic the darker shades of the hair have more blue in them, while the lighter shades are more green/yellow. The lesson: shift hue as well as lightness in your color ramps.

Here's how I usually pixel:
1. Draw the lineart, which you have done
2. Fill in with colors, you still have some white areas, you should decide what's going to be in those sections
3. Do the lighting, pick a lightsource, then blot out areas that you think will be lighter with lighter colors, and areas that you think will have shadows with a darker color
4. Texture, I neaten up the lighting, add more colors, add textures such as dithering, get rid of the black outlining, and so fourth
remember that in 3d everything has it's own highllighting and shadows. The face doesn't all get the same lighting, because it' not flat, so you have to shade each part separately, the nose, the cheeks, the forehead, and so on.
And listen to Hatch, his color advice is good.
Hopefully some of that helps, if you alredy knew some of it, just ignore it ^^

Alright guys, thanks for the C+C :) you helped me a lot so far. I tried changing the colours of the hair, but i didn't change any colours other than those, i'll get there.
![]() @skeddles Actually, i do a roguh shading first, but for some reason i prefer to pixel things part-by-part, so that's why the rest is still flat :) But i tried following you advice, and did a rough shading on some areas. And where you saw white areas? The skin, maybe? I noticed it was too pale, so i tried another colour tone, but i'm not good with skin >.< So guys, i'd like you to give me some advice on shading. See the her skirt? I'm having a lot of trouble with shading her clothes, even roughly. The lightsource is supposed to be on the top-right of the picture. Thanks a lot, guys. I just noticed something; Her ponytail holder looks square, round it off.

yeah, tracing is legal under the contexts you've described, but it'll be a mod other than me that lets it in.
tracing is a lot like training wheels, and anyone old enough for PJ is old enough to learn to ride their own bike. |

Very cute, looks like you're getting there. I Feel like you need to add more highlights to the hair. That's a lot of long, straight hair, and that kind of hair is always super shiny. It looks like you need to broaden out the highlights on the front pony tail, and add some shinies to the top of her head.
The skirt should be very simple to shade since it's pleated. Try looking up pleated skirt on google and looking at how the shadows lay. |
