Hi all,
Was playing around with a 10 colour palette for about an hour, then decided to start pushing pixels with it. Here it is so far, any suggestions/tips/advice is very welcome. Current:- ![]() Before:- ![]() Edited by mambazo - 15 October 2009 at 3:22pm |

Your lightest pinks are far too saturated for human skin. Look here. Couldn't find a photo, but this seems accurate enough.

I've reduced the hue on the lighter tones. I'd like to keep some kind of vibrant feel to it though.

That's it! Now, I don't think the right thigh needs go to the dark blue, and the transition there isn't good anyway. It's ok on the left because it's natural to have shadow there, although the vertical lines hurt the eye a bit.
The right wrist looks weird too. |

Before variant looks more interesting to me, desprite an unnaturalness - it's more colourful.
This talking reminded me about how Frazetta deals with colors and shadows. ![]() Edited by A.B. Lazer - 15 October 2009 at 3:55pm |

I've had a little play around with her rump (not what it sounds like!)
Does this work better? ![]() In my head, the darkness in the original indicates that her leg is ever so slightly raised, and with the arm hanging there, I thought not much light would be hitting that area, as the left-side light is coming from a hard angle. However, I do agree the transitions are bad! I prefer the hand in the version on the right, but after trying many different curves for the shading on the rump, it still doesn't feel like it implies the correct volume/shape. Any ideas? :S |

![]() Changed light on butts and hand, outlines of thighs, addressed banding in arm, changed 2 or 3 pixels in the face. All this very quickly and imperfectly. About the face, I can't say I dislike your 2 right angles. Still, I think I prefer mine. Edit: light on butt should probably be a mix of yours and mine. I like the banding fix. Thanks!
![]() EDIT: The shading on your butt makes her right thigh look massive, and her left cheek kinda pulled apart, to my eyes. (sorry if that is harsh!) Its odd. The more realistic it gets, the less I like it. Sorta makes it a pointless piece. Might as well take a photo and scale it down ![]() Maybe something presentational, or compositional could make it surreal again? ![]() Edited by mambazo - 16 October 2009 at 4:45am |

Much better! The colors now obviously come from the light and not the skin, so there is none of the earlier problem. I guess you're right about the face, but I remain unconvinced about the right butt-thigh: there is a sudden loss of volume there. Mine wasn't much better anyway.
Composition: I'm not overly fond of curtains... If you keep them, you should lower the central knot, move the left one closer to the lady, and crop the image. It will look better if she is not in the middle, and has more space in the direction she's facing. Edit: not so sure about the knots. I just don't like them in the middle, esp the left one.
