It's done!
![]() ![]() So uh... yeah. The title in short does say what I'm working on right now. My fourth Pixel Portrait: ![]() Reference: ![]() It's a picture of a few years ago of a close friend of mine. She talked me into making another pixel, and you might have seen it between the new pixel art lately (animated avatar for 'Sweet Fox). At the same time I decided to make a portrait of her ![]() Anyhow, she gave me this picture, which is very nice in my opinion, but also a challenge to make with the hair blowing in the wind. I decided to at least try it out and set myself a goal to make it look better than my previous pixel portrait: ![]() The piece is far from finished, I know... But at this stage, do you have comments on what I'm doing? ![]() Edit 1: Here's some progress I made. I knew there was something wrong with the haircut, and I decided to move parts of the hair around a bit. I still need to improve some things on the overall shape of the haircut, but I think it's better now: ![]() ![]() New Old Edit 2: The past few weeks I haven't had time to work on the portrait. The progress over the time is visible though; I finished making the haircut 'fuller,' edited a few of the hair locks (including one of them I already coloured - I found it too straight and it didn't fit the rest). Here is the result of all these seemingly small yet (imo) important edits: ![]() ![]() New Old Edit 3: Time for another update: ![]() ![]() New Old I pretty much finished on filling up the hair I think ![]() ![]() Bump and update (#4): ![]() ![]() New Old Obvious change of course is the skin tone ![]() Now I've redone the skin, I'm going to revise the way I filled up the hair. It looks differently styled from the skin. It also needs a change in palette, slightly more red maybe, less saturation for sure... ![]() Update 5: ![]() ![]() New Old The changes I've made are pretty diverse. A little dithering at the chin, changing the colour of the lips from the skin (still not completely satisfied with the colours yet, somehow), added more depth to the hair, made the hair slightly more red and the colours have less saturation. I also cleaned the palette and piece of unused colours, the total with background according to Irfanview is currently 32 colours. I could have done with one or two colours less in the hair, but I'm pretty satisfied with that colour count at the moment ![]() Anyway, here's update #6: ![]() ![]() New Old Minor changes at the shadow at her mouth. Changed the shadow at the throat a bit, too, because of the bigger edit I made; The jacket. It's based on a leather jacket she wears nowadays - I really like it, and it looks good with her hair, so I thought it would be nice to use it for the pixel. I still need to change it somewhat, and I will adress the colours themselves again (not only the skin, but also the hair). I also have to start thinking about a background. Any thoughts? Update #7: ![]() ![]() New Old I tried out what Artisan mentioned, and made the skin tones a little purple-like in the shadow colours. While I had my doubts on how it would turn out regarding keeping the skin pale, it turned out way better than my expectations! Thanks Artisan! ![]() I also started work on the Anti-Aliasing of the piece, currently only the lines inside the portrait are AA'd. I will have to pick a background and background colour(s) first before I continue with the AA-process. Update 8: ![]() I looked at many background colours. Soft Purple, which looked pretty good, but only with darker colours, which became too dark to be realistic with the light source. I then tried soft and warm orange and red colours, but this just didn't seem right with the high amount of colours that already have this hue. After that I went for the option in between; Soft pink/red and purple-like red. I think it compliments the piece the best of the options I've tried The background consists of a tree line below and a lighter sky which turns brighter and brighter the more you go to the left upper corner of the piece. It's not done yet, I just wanted to show you this and ask for opinions ![]() Update 9: ![]() ![]() New Old As you see I finished off the background. After that I AA'd all outlines (I did this before starting the edits on the points that Snader mentioned), and I quite like the result that I got from doing that ![]() After this I changed the teeth, made the eye bigger and started on recolouring the hair. Especially on the top I have some more things to change, and I will add some more locks to fill it in a bit more. Edited by Varock Shade - 24 December 2009 at 1:37pm |

Yeah I know - 31 is a bit much at the moment, some colours will not be needed in the end, and though I will try to decrease the colour count, I think it may increase. Unlike the previous portrait I want this to be in full-colour, and the AA and clothes have yet to be added

Already looking better. It was a good choice to use a more interesting reference photo; the previous portrait suffered a bit from its static pose.
Your colours could really use some work, right now they are boring and there are quite a number of useless colours. Maybe some more contrast in the face and I think you could benefit from experimentation with hues; why not try a little bit of colour in the greys? Also, I think you could play around wih the face dithering a bit, perhaps something more interesting than generic ordered dither. In fact, you could try not dithering at all; it's not really that great for skin texture anyway. Look at the reference image - her skin is smooth but in your piece it's rough and gravely. |

Her entire face is grey. When one gets around to making the skin tones, some of the shades can easily be replaced with hair color meshing with skin color to reduce the color count.

Please: Go as realistic as you can with the shapes, as wild with the colors.
Be proud of that you do it the pixel way, and proof that! |

need to improve the overall shape of the haircut, but I
think it's better now than it was before:
![]() ![]() New Old I will adress the issues with the colours after filling everything up, and before even continuing the colouring of the piece I want the shape of the hair exactly right. Edited by Varock Shade - 17 October 2009 at 5:17am |

The only thing I can see that looks a bit "off" is the curvature of the bottom lip where it meets the teeth... in the reference pic it curves downward away from the mouth while in the pixel it appears more straight across.
That being said, I'm amazed by (and a little jealous of) the job you've done on the hair. This piece is really coming along! Edited by vampireslug - 03 December 2009 at 11:51am |

have you tried to change your colour ramp of the face and hair so that the dark shades go towards purple or red/blue?... some of your darker colours seem too grey i think purple or red would warm this up a treat.
looking good regardless though. |

buh i had typed an entire essay here, but then stupid windows decided to open an image in opera (as opposed to the image viewer) so i'll keep it short: it looks good buy you'rre skipping a beat on the hair. there is very little overall volume, just clumps of hair, which look rather pillowshaded the lips should be viewed more sideways (it looks more like 3/4th now) currently like you should see more of the underside of the chin, and the perspective on the eyebrows is a bit off as well. the shirt is rather shapeless too, get some forms in there. the likeness is pretty good so far, though if you want to improve here's a few pointers: and finally: personally i like the upright hair fluff in the photo, adds some dynamic, and the shadow over the face would tie the hair in better. edit: osnap, i forgot to add some ref for how you could handle the hair: detail is important, but volume is importander Edited by snader - 23 December 2009 at 9:41am |

Thanks for the advice!
![]() ![]() You are right about the underside of the chin and the lower lip. However, it seemed to me like the whole 'camera point' of my pixel was a little off from the photo (the person is viewed a little higher up on the photo than on my pixel). I think it wouldn't look right making the underside of the chin more visible and changing the lower lip like on the photo (the last of which I tried earlier and didn't look right). As for the hair, I will try to adress some parts which may have a pillow shading, and make some other edits hopefully complimenting depth in the piece ![]() |
