Hey guys. I've been trying to get back into pixel art again after my 5+ year hiatus, so I decided to finish some old projects. This one is based on a lineart by So-lou.

Old version (32 colors+bg):

New version (17 colors+bg) (edit: lighter bg seems better here):

I decided to re-do all the scales on the tail, since the old version was very rushed, but I'm not very happy with how the tail is looking right now, either. The fin looks good enough right now, but I already plan some touching ups.

The breasts are also rather tricky to do... Something just looks off, no idea what. Oh, and I'm gonna add a proper background later.

Any comments?

An alternative to scales.
The light on the dolphin skin is so fishy.

edit to the human half of the mermaid.
i agree that the scales aren't working out yet. too big, and they seem to fit together like cobblestone rather than small overlapping scales.

oh, and welcome back

Eyebrows are too harsh, unattractive and masculine.
Although not always a good design choice with an alluring figure I am tempted to think that a slight belly would look good here.

Because the area is so small. For the scales I would pixel the dark with 2 colors, the medium with 3 and the light with 5 colors.

Thanks, but I'm trying a more realistic look. :)

Yeah, I checked that on the gallery. :) I'd really like to try some texture, though, so that's kind of my last resort.

Yhe scales don't work on that size. I'm trying something more subtle with the colors, seems to be working better. Great work on the boobs, too. I'm... studying them now.

I'm re-working the entire head now, had some idea for the rest of the scene, so the expression is going to be totally different. It should look more dynamic, too.

Yeah, the features were too harsh. Even thought I'm a bit into the masculine faces, that face just wasn't working. I'm changing the pose in a major way now, so the entire head will be re-done. Gonna keep that in mind. :)

I'm wondering how to create the transition between the fish and human part. Wouldn't a belly make it even more difficult? Either way, I'll give it a try.

Gonna try that coloring tip. Thanks, man!
