Hey guys, I need some help. I just recently got back into pixel art, and I'm having a hard time finding stuff to put in my picture. Right now, I only have what is going to be the background to a generator room for a game me and my friend are making. I was hoping you guys could take a look and tell me what I could be doing differently, what's good, what needs to change, what else I could add, stuff like that. Keep in mind, I'm not the most creative guy out there, so suggestions would be great.
Here's the shot: ![]() Anything that looks like it needs changing, just let me know. And also, if the palette doesn't look right, that's also because I'm not the best with palettes either. Thanks guys. Edited by HereTic - 09 July 2010 at 2:16pm |

Okay, after a bit of work, and help from my friend, here's my updated screenshot. It looks pretty good in my opinion, but it still looks bland. And I don't know what to put in the background. Comments, concerns?

When i look at this i feel like its one of many platforms in a huge room... as such i would probably do a BG which looks like far off metal panels, maybe with some windows to show space (space station...).
other things i notice is lack of 'stuff' in reality, there's no room in a space station, because of all the equipment. maybe you could put in some panels, screens, doorways, vents, light sources... and other items... basically imagine you're in a closed off room. air tight. what do you need to survive? |

I know what you mean, but about the windows, this is a room in the heart of the space ship. And what I'm going for, is that the grey border, are basically the walls of the room, that's the foreground which the character will actually come in contact with. But I'm going for more detailed background than most people do. And this space station is abandoned, it was attacked from the inside and everyone was killed a few years earlier, and you as the character come back to turn the generator on to learn what happened. The generator, the thing in the back right, is way off in the distance, as you can see from the small computer near the base of it. And the thing in front of it, is close, but still a little ways away from the character in terms of depth. But to me, the walls look bland, but I like the style I did them in. And I don't know how else to texture them, I don't do well with texturing things. And on things that would be in the space station, I tried to add crates.. but I took them out as you can see because I just didn't like them very much. And plus, this is the generator room, and it's a big space station, they don't need to store stuff in there. But thanks for the help, no one else seems to care.
Do you have any suggestions as to where I might ut some panels, and what kind of panels were you thinking of. And the lights are off, because the power has been off since the attack. |

![]() OK, so here's my take on it. first thing i notice is you are inconsistant with detailing... many things are detailed like the generator, and others are just plain, like the walls (green) second, your lightsource is a little wonkey. in some areas you have it on the left, and others on the right. (red) as for what i'm suggesting to add (third picture). Lights - even if they're off, they need to be there... detailing - on the walls, what are they made out of? (i chose metal) do they have inconsistancies? (i threw in some pipes. why? because they look cool) screens - its a future-style screen... so add some more technology. in addition to that, in a generator room, there are alot of things that would need monitoring, thus more monitors. (not to mention they look cool) i fixed the shadow on the steps... and i hope you do something with the steps simmilar to how you did in your original (middle pic) for the background i did HUGE metal panels. if this is for a game or something then make sure that you can tell distance with parrelax. you have my permission to use anything i post in this thread, pixel per pixel if you wish. (normally i do poor edits, so that the person i'm helping can put his or her own spin on it, but in this case i wanted to illustrate something very specific) Hope this helps! |

That 'shadow' you fixed on the stairs actually wasn't a shadow. It was meant to be a trim on the stairs, but I forgot about it. And I like what you did to it, it looks good, but it's not what I was going for, but it does give me ideas
And I know that the textures are inconsistent, that's one thing I'm stuck on right now. I was planning to add textures, but I don't know where to start. And you bring up a point, what is it made out of? Metal? And I'm working on having some pipe overhangs in the foreground that scroll different to create the illusion of depth. And I'm thinking I might do the same thing with the background but it moves slower Let me get a current shot of what I have so you can see what I mean. |

![]() Here's what I have so far, but looking at it, I think the color of the pipes is too blue. But I don't know what color to change them to if I do change them. |

Here's my take on it, sorry that it's a bit much of an edit, I kind of got lost in it =P What did I do? (these steps are not clearly represented in the image) -sampled some of your colors Comparison: What's the big differences with yours? |

I love portal! I recognized it immediately! XD
HereTic, snader's post is very useful, but I want to add something to his edit. You see the grey he uses? I think that that should be a little more blue, and the forground blues should be a little less saturated. Also, I think that the shading on the stairs should be expanding as the stairs themselves do. |
