Please crit. I'm completely new to the forums and I hope to improve my abilities. :P
Here's mah tasteh pear! ![]() I'm new to using AA so please tell me how I'm doing. Also the colors and dithering. (Not my specialty) I think the highlights might be too much but I needed a second opinion. :) ~Tankz |

Looks yummy!
Reduce the amount of colours you're using (for a small palette).
Enlarge the difference between each colour (for better contrast). Move a tiny bit towards other colours (you're hue shifting). Your highlights look a bit 'airy', try and increase the saturation more. Outer line is too thick. Only really need one colour for the stem, unless you increase the contrast. Just a few things to consider, come back after you have a whack at editing and I'll adivse you again. :-)

Okay. so I tried out some of the stuff you suggested. Most of the improvements are to satisfaction but the transition from the nutral color to the first shade is too suddle, sort of giving its a boxish look to it. I like the highlights but they seem a little too intense. Also i toned down the AA by two shades. ;P
Before
![]() 15 colors
After
![]() 11 colors
So I made the darkest shade lean a little twords a bluish color as well.
But I greatly appreciate your help and I hope I can keep making it look better. XD
![]() Edit: I got rid of the dots as they were distracting but as I look back on it, they served more as dither then a texture. Maybe that's why it looks so boxish? Edited by Doggyfangz29 - 30 April 2011 at 10:38am |

I liked the 15 color version much better.
Anyway, it doesn't seem to have any texture. It doesn't look very... Peary. ![]() |

Lol... ture true. I did look over some ref pics of pears and I tried adding those little dots that give it texture but it ended up being a mess. D: But I'll look into other ways to add that... Peary texture. ;)

emphasizing the pear shape woould make it more interesting. right now it's shaped and shaded a lot like an egg. working in some less dull, more yellow shades might help too

I don't really think the suggestion was to bring the palette closer, only to brighten it up a bit. Here's an 11 color palette I threw together-
![]() It's most likely horrible, but has a little more yellow in it while still having a shifted hue that moves toward a slightly blueish green. For the shape, here's an examination of that real pear above- ![]() The bottom half as a more bulbous form. This it important because it means the brightest highlight is actually broken into two parts. It also means that, because of the changing viewing angle as the pear rounds away from you, the dots become more concentrated around the edges and are com-PEAR-atively sparse at the center. ![]() Here's that pear photo edited with the palette above. The reason I put the blueish greens in the palette was to use as an outline color, which of course the photo doesn't have an outline so those colors didn't really get used well in this edit. Also I added white just as a background. Just as a side note, your avatar and at least one of the pear versions here seems to have some partially transparent pixels in it. For certain reasons people around here tend to frown on using partial trans-PEAR-incy. Edited by tanuki - 30 April 2011 at 10:44pm |

Lol. Well this helped a lot. I'll resort to using these techniques later on. As for the image itself, I now understand the 'anatomy' of the pear. As well as refraining from using the partial trans-PEAR-incy. ;)
Helped a lot! |
