Alright, I've been wanting to learn how to properly work in the same way the Pokemon company does with their sprite. I think it's called sel-out shading? I'm not sure, let me show you what i have at the moment:

The white background to to make it look better.

I plan on making three stages, i don't have any names yet...

there aren't a lot of pokemon done in side-view. and yes pokemon does use sel-out (sometimes they just due proper outline shading though). the legs look like they stick into his sides like a cootie, and so look disconnected from the torso.
what type of pokemon is it, and what sort of things is it based on?

Alright i made an edit, i tried to make him face the screen more, so he's at a better angle. I lowered the limb count and made the legs more connected looking. And it's not really based off of anything... I think the Pokemon franchise needs more original ideas, have you seen the new generation? They now have a pokemon that's just a duck, nothing else, just a duck... So this one's based off of an original idea of mine.

well the new generation is based off of stupid stuff, like an ice cream cone or a chandelier. old generation was based on cool stuff, like an existing animal or a legendary creature. some new generation stuff suffers from the same thing this suffers from, which is digimon-syndrome, where it's just a generic type of cute japanese creature. for instance, this looks kinda like an anteater, so you could always play up those characteristics, or add some sort of elemental effect according to its type.

or if you really don't want to base it off anything, just abstract the formal qualities, because right now it just seems kinda plain. elongat the snout, make the feet bigger or give it hooves, give it a long, fat tail. eyes on stalks. big floppy ears. two tails.
you get the idea

That's the very reason I'm angry with the Pokemon company, what were they thinking? And i had no idea you were a pokemon fan...

Ears, I'll think of more things to add later on...

Edit: I added a patch of fur to the torso:

Edit2:I made the rough version of the first stage:

I think it's a bit too small...

Edit3:I completely re-did the first stage:
