Hi everyone,

I work since few weeks on a videogame project (yes one more). First alone, I was joined by an other developer who have similar ideas.

I'm not an amateur in development, I develop since 6 years and now I have my own company in Hong Kong and it works well by making website for few customers in France.

The videogame project is ambitious (not like a MMO at all but I know how a little project can be hard to complete) and I think in few month I will need a competent pixel artist to start visual parts of the game.

I prefer to pay an artist with a percent of the final product (by joining the team) but I'm curious to know how much can cost a work for a simple sprite, a spritesheet in 4 animations at 8 directions, a landscape etc... Do you have any ideas please ?

Thanks a lot.

Depending on the difficoulty, how big are sprites.. what type of design are you going after? Try to clarify a bit more perhaps. I know theres people who make spritesheets 150$ for 8 directions isometric walking etc.

Depends on both the size and the frame count. If it's a mediocre sprite such as 64*64 and the animations are walk, attack, death and idle, then I'd say $500 for 8 directions (5 + 3 mirrored).

Thanks for the reply.

Actually sprites are sized for 32x32 but we can make more than 32px in height if needed. I think smaller is harder, right ?

For one animation we want to use 4 sprites (3+1 copy), we have 5x3x4 (5, for 8 directions, 4 is walk, stand, attack, jump) different kind of animation basically, so 60 sprites for a "body". At begining 4 models will be enought ~> 240 sprites.

We have made a system where 4 different items are showed on the owner, so we need again 60 sprites for armor, helmet (or head), legs and arms. Colors are changed by shader (or color filter) so we need about 1 model of each at begining. => 240 sprites.

Moreover we need 20 differents tiles, 10 cliffs, 3 tree, 10 rocks, 5 weapons (there are animated by deformation) to start a basic presentations of games mechanism.

So we need something like 500 sprites in 32px x 32px.

ps : of course we provide a detailed documentations about all sprites needed to the artist.
