Back again, this time with my attempt at an avatar for this site. While I like the little elf guy he isn't quite me. I'm going to post the image without explaining what it is as a test to see if it is immediately apparent. I have had a few people ask already and that is a bad sign in my opinion. Anyway, I am kind of stuck as to were to go from here. Any advice is appreciated.

To me it looks like star rising over a planet's horizon!, But until I can get the idea of what you're trying to make, I can help you no further

That is exactly what it is.

I think I am having issues with the lighting right now. It seems off for some reason.

As far as the lighting, there is no direct source that I see right now, I'd start with shading the planet, having it lighter towards the top of the horizon and darkening as it goes down (farther away from the star, less light there is) I think then you can get a good direction of where you want to go with it!

Here's what I have so far. I've completely redone the planet and added a few more colors for AA purposes.

Big improvement! But I do think the lighting cuts off a little early, I'd maybe make it fade a little more slowly and show a little more light directly in front of the stars path, sorta like this:http://tat-online.webs.com/photos/CG-Wallpaper/horizon___widescreen_wallpaper_by_hameed.jpg

hmm, good point. Another thing I noticed is that the color of my planet doesn't match the light from the star as much as it should.

3rd edit:

I changed the colors of the planet, widened the highlight bands and added some more light flares across the planet.

Overall this has 14 colors.

I'm going to wait about three hours for feedback, if I don't get any I will submit it to the gallery.

You're spreading the light too far, needs a sharper shadow, and a narrower lit area. By the time the sun lights as much surface area as you have lit, it's already well past the 'rim' of the planet.

Ok, spent a few minutes this morning fiddling with the highlights again. Mainly what I did was change out some colors. Let me know which one you guys think is better.

Old:

New version 1:

New version 2:

The differences are fairly subtle but I do think the two new ones are an improvement over the old one.

i think snader's right, the day/night transition on the planet should be closer to the horizon and maybe more compact. of the two new revisions, the second one is too bright in the highlights but the first looks about right colorwise.
