Have you considered working outside of octagons? And there's absolutely no reason to have such a giant canvas.

That's like saying you can't open a door so you break it down instead.... 

Have you TRIED practicing drawing circles?  And really, all you have to do is do a very rough circle and then erase, and shift the pixels around until you can get it is round as you can.  There are mathematical ways to make circles with pixel art, but you might as well try to do one yourself... 

And besides, what pixel software are you using?  Just about all pixel pushing software allows you to change the brush to a large circular one.  With that kinda brush, all you need to do is click once.  Tough I know
