I'm making a dragonfruit for this week's challenge. Any Comments?
![]() I'll have a BG afterwards. |

looks more like a fruit turning into a dragon than a fruit that has been carved into a jack-o-lantern. the yellow isn't working as a highlight on the green, it isn't light enough. the side of the head seems to be lit about as well as the top of the head, rather than obscured in shadow, which is what I'd expect if the light is coming from the upper left (as the shading on the leaves indicates).

Yeah, I see what you mean. I've been experimenting with color for a while, and I'm still a little new at it. I just picked up the depth color change, as you see with the leaves. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep this as a jack-o-lantern, instead of a dragonfruit...er...dragon?
UPDATE: ![]() I fixed the leaves and lower lip. Still looks like a dragon, though. Also, the yellow is gone. Edited by AirStyle - 25 October 2012 at 9:31am |

jack o lanterns are hollow on the inside and filled with light, so the eyes should be bright lights, or holes with fire coming out if you wanted, rather than eyeballs. Same for the teeth. Should be a carved fruit, not a fruit transforming into a real animal with soft tissue and bones.

So would the outer shape of this fruit have to change? I can do the fire quite easily, if that's all I have to do.

UPDATE:
Changed a couple of colors, and hope to add some animated smoke tonight. The teeth look jacked up right now. ![]() I now have two more colors to use before I've used 16! I wonder what I'll do with them...? |

Just get rid of the teeth.
If it was a real dragon fruit laying there on the table, and you picked it up and carved it with a knife to make it LOOK like it had teeth... then I'm sure you can imagine what the result would look like. It wouldn't have literal teeth. |

Thanks for that. I'll see what I can put in it's place. I'd hate just have a hole there. Maybe some dimly lit candles?

I don't think you'll make candles readable at this size. Make it less of a dragon and more of a fruit, as others suggested. Pixel the dragonfruit, and then "carve" into it:

Ah well, in the least bit, I'll have another piece to submit, and a new avatar

I know it doesn't look that much like the fruit anymore, but do you think I should still submit this to the challenge?

Might as well. the 'cool flame' isn't bright enough to read as light/fire though. If you want it to look like the fruit then place the spikes like the fruit has them placed (more randomly according to the anatomy) instead of how a dragon's spikes are placed. The problem plaguing you from the outset is you've been turning a piece of fruit into an anatomical dragon and not a jack-o-lantern.

I think I got it. I got so wrapped up with making it look like a dragon, that I completely forgot the challenge!!! Thanks so much for your input: all you guys. If I make another one, and submitted it as well, would that look too bad?
EDIT: Nevermind. I decided not to submit it, and just do another one. I was worried it may not have fit the challenge anymore. Besides, no one was thinking it was a dragonfruit until I said something. *sigh* Ah, well. Continuing happily... Edited by AirStyle - 26 October 2012 at 8:15am |

This thread can be bumped now. As you can tell from my avatar, I've finished it. I also decided to submit it anyway. Yes, I know, fickle me. :P I'm working on a new concept right now. Hopefully it'll come out closer to the challenge than this one.
