Hey everyone! I've lurked here for a bit, and realized I finally had an issue of my own. So I decided I'd join up and see what people think :P

I've been developing a game similar to the old FFT/FFTA style of games for awhile now. Art isn't at all my forte, I'm more of a programmer and designer. But so far, I have some ideas for how the game should look.

I'm stuck at the moment, since I feel like I'm close to finally nailing the feel I want for these guys, but I need some help. Again, first time doing game art :P

Anyways, let me know what you think. Shading might be my main issue, but again, I'm stuck on how to proceed from here.

EDIT: Realized people probably want a 1x screen, so here:

Biggest issue for me is the way the heads are made. They look like they have the shape of sardine cans - short and round. Check out the Tactics heads: they have huge eyes and no mouths like yours, but their heads look tall, with a forehead and a jaw with room for a (chibi sized) nose/mouth, even though they're not shown.

As for the shading, you're not pillow shading, which is good, but you need to pick a direction for the lighting and stick with it - the left guy for example has light coming from different directions on each foot. (For example, Tactics has light coming from above the characters, so they can look uniform from all angles (no 'this guy is facing left and this guy right, why is one of them not in shadow?' stuff)

Aside from that, your color choices could be more interesting, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you how a good color ramp would work. One of the sections on the forums here have a lot of tutorials that might help :)

Oh, thanks very much for the response! Exactly the feedback I was looking for :)

Yeah, I'll have to work on my color palette a bit, I admittedly didn't put as much effort into solidifying that. And I like your other suggestions; I'll make a few edits and update later.

Oh, hey I'm pretty familiar with FFT spriting   . Zerantanus gave the best advice possible as for having a solid light source. The contrast is a bit low and I think the colours could be a bit brighter or  more saturated maybe. One concern I have for you is the size of the sprites so far. They're pretty big aren't they? I'd have to compare them to others to really tell. but that could lead to a world of pain/work as for animating.
Anyway, keep it up!
