Hi

So recently I was thinking of a simple game concept to try out programming for mobile devices. Came up with Advance Wars style game set in medieval Japan inspired by Shogun TW. Let's see if this gets anywhere.

So here's couple of sprites I did today. Tried out animating them aswell. Any critic or advice would be great. Haven't really settled with the palette.

Got time to make one more before going to bed.

Outlines are kinda giving me a headache... the piece starts looking pretty messy when zoomed in.

Took me a while to figure out that the black area appearing on their face during the attack animation is an open mouth. Also the rider's helmet looks more like an American civil war cavalry hat to me, than a Shogun-era helmet.

But overall, this is all fanstastic work and I'm very excited by this project of yours!

Thanks. I see what you mean with the helmet.
I felt like I needed one extra color to go with the outlines. Reworked the helmet and armors a bit. Changed the pose of horseman since I figured animating the attack with the arm in the back would be inconvenient.

I think this would benefit from a richer color palette. Right now the colors look a little dull to me.
You could always redo the outlines to be darker and lighter shades of the object's color? Just a suggestion

I agree with the colors. Started working on a sketch of a battle scene to get better idea of the palette. Not sure if the grass looks right. I don't usually do landscape art so any input on this would be great.

edit: Small update

Final scene. Not sure if I should submit this one.

I like it a lot, but... it feels like a serious style clash to me. Not just between the characters and the background, but even between the detailed grass and the stylistic mountains.

Maybe something like this would be a better compromise between cartoony and photorealistic?

On the other hand, your version does look kind of similar to the original Advance Wars backgrounds, so maybe you've accomplished exactly what you wanted.

EDIT: I do think the characters blended in more with the background in the Advance Wars games though. The palette was more unified perhaps. A lot of low saturation colours.

Thanks again for the feedback. I think it's the characters. The colors are too saturated compared to the background.

Reworked the palette again a bit. Also started pixeling the strategic view. Unit sprites are pretty challenging if I'm to keep 16x16 resolution for overworld like in Advance Wars. Anyways, here's how it looks now.

Here's the palette:

I think I'm gonna let this cook for a while and probably going to start prototyping codewise.

It is much better than it was before, but I still think you should hue shift the palette more, mainly with the skin tones and silver helmets. It's showing a lot of promise, and still looks great at this stage!
