Simply a base female run cycle to work off of for a sidesroller. I'm quite happy with it, but figured I'd have some fresh eyes take a look before I start working off it.

It looks really fluid and awesome. I like how you got cool shading with only three variations for a piece in that size. I'm really new to PA but I think the light reflection in the head doesn't correspond with the rest of the work... like it should stay for one more frame or two... or maybe it's just my OCD XD

Looks pretty good, although quite jerky because every frame is drawn as a still rather than an object in motion (same reason claymation looks awkward). I don't know the name for it (not an animator) but maybe add some "trailing bits" where parts of her body move a great distance between frames? Like in this: http://www.feplanet.net/media/sprites/8/battle/sheets/enemy/oneil_fighter_axe.gif

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it!
xAuron, the light on the head is just a remnant I forgot to clean up. Of course, I forgot it again for this iteration, so it's still there to bother you :P
NoeL: Good suggestion. I'm no animator either, so I have no idea how to really utilize those things properly. I gave it a quick and dirty go, though.

I also moved some stuff around to hopefully make it smoother. The head is a bit squashed in some frames now, not sure if the effect is really all that detrimental to the animation.

base:

faster, with "motion blur"

That's bad usage of motion blur.

First of all, you can't emote fast running very well with this casual body position, even if you blur it. It just looks strange.

Second, your blur is not right, blur should cover area from previous position to new position, cause it represents large number of inbettween positions for short amount of time. You can't blur just feet, or specific part of the leg with the same forms (pointy stripe). You should watch arcs in body movement and create blur based on that. For example knee is making smaller arch than feet.

You should watch some cartoons for reference, they use this technique perfectly.

Thanks for the feedback, HarveyDentMustDie. I think I will forego the motion blur on this, but in the interest of learning I've made another sketch to see if I've understood what you were saying. Again, this is simply a really quick sketch to explore the concept, not in any way meant to be a final pass.

edit: this is between frame 5 and 6, btw, and obviously contained to simply the one leg.

Motion blur shape

How about multiples?

This is better. :) That's what I was talking about. Choice of blur depends on style you are aiming for.

But as I said it's not enough to add blur to make her run fast. Blur just compensate small number of frames and very fast movement. But you can't run fast with this casual body movement. Watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH-3cHxXAK0 . Look how arms and legs travel further.

Yup, I understand. Like I said, not going for motion blur on this one, I just wanted to understand a little more about the technique. It is indeed meant to more of a casual run. Maybe i will try my hand at a faster, more extreme cycle next, and try to get this motion blur down. Thanks for the help! :)
