Step0:
quick sketch ![]() Step1: touch the worst parts. Just to see how it goes. ![]() Step1.5 slice it into two layers and make quick animation just to see how large it will be ![]() Well it will be big. more than 600 frames. I will also have to make turning animation, fire animation, add some parallax, maybe HDR effect (but it will cost me some colors), add some human silhouettes, cloud animation, make proper cycling of the background enough work till the end of this week. the grass is the simplest part actually.
it's this animation: ![]() It is tempting to write a program to add grass automatically, but I am not sure if it will be against the rules or not. |

If he finishes that in style, I think it'd be a contender even in a crowded weekly challenge. I somehow like the roughed out steps a bit more than the more finished hard lines though - maybe uneven them a bit, to show heavy use? Guess I'll reserve judgement and see how it pans out... |

This seems like a contest I'd try taking part in, and, yes, Muxaun's WIP is indeed fascinating.
I'd even like it as a whole picture, not the animation, but that's against the rules :c Either way, here's my WIP so far. ![]() I don't really know where to take it, but I can draw a few people and maybe a campfire there. Also I need to draw more vegetation and props/doodads. Edited by Pookaball - 04 February 2015 at 12:17am |

I thought to myself : "Hey, let's go check out PixelJoint after not visiting for so long!"
And then my whims meet with a challenge which stumps me like no other challenge had managed before. Well, f**k me. P.S: Muxaun, which program did you use to animate your scenes? Edited by TrojanMonkey - 04 February 2015 at 4:44am |

@Muxaun
Cool, I always thought studying programming can come in handy in art. Do you automate a lot of animations like this and how exactly does your program work? |

There is nothing between frame by frame manual editing like graphicsgale and no pixel manipulation at all but move your existing objects like Spriter... I am curious to what your program can do, how it managed to copy and paste those grass animations so good! |

added some more assets, fixed background layer, experimented with clouds.
![]() Theese all will end up sitting on different layers. + I'll have to add more assets. + put grass animation back, add animated people, animate trees, stars and fire. Originally posted by Pookaball

Pixeling everithing manually is the core of pixel art itself IMO. But I think that the most boring work should be automated though. Originally posted by Hapiel

Layers can be animated. Then I load those files into gimp, optimize them and export as gif. Nothing special. here's a screenshot of the UI if you're interested: http://i.imgur.com/ThrOEWN.png Edited by Muxaun - 04 February 2015 at 8:47pm |

Originally posted by Muxaun ![]() Thanks for the explanation. Now I still wonder how you did the grass quickly, maybe this is a GIMP feature (I don't use GIMP, I woudn't know). Anyway, I noticed why the scrolling looks a bit odd: If you'd be driving by the scene at this speed, the sun wouldn't move position at all! The moving sun suggest that the camera is rotating but not moving, but then the background would actually have to move faster than the foreground, not the other way around! |

to me, the scrolling sun suggested the passage of time from the late afternoon to night.

@Hapiel: I didn't think this way.
You're probably right. But what if the camera is moving AND slowly turning around? Now I still wonder how you did the grass quickly, maybe this is a GIMP feature there are several plugins that allow copy-paste of multiple layers. Like this: http://registry.gimp.org/node/24270 .Update: 1.36 Megabytes! It is VERY hard to manipulate everything. ![]() I still have to animate the fire, fix layout and colors to make everything visible. + animate alpacas, hair, stair, and the sky looks like it should be animated too. Too much work. [UPDATE] Looking at it now I think I should abandon the parallax idea and just make a good static scenery without shifting everything Edited by Muxaun - 06 February 2015 at 2:39pm |

I like the parallax I do think its moving too fast and it would be great if it looped.
So cool seeing something new from you :) |

fitting everything to look good with parallax and looping it properly is a pain: it is a long process of adjusting layout, speed, building the animation, staring at it for a minut and repeat all steps over and over again.
Tried polishing some parts without parallax. Here's a result ![]() I have to sleep to decide wich way I'll go. |

![]() tried to add reflections to the smoke and failed clouds look unfinished, but I don't know how to fix them. I guess this is going to be the final version. Edited by Muxaun - 07 February 2015 at 1:16pm |
