For me it is a male, but he lean dangerously to the right. I have trouble figuring out how he stand.

So I tried to make it look stable and I think the problem is that, in this stance, the shoulder need to be over the feet. and also since his left foot is behind (higher) his right foot this suggest a little perspective ? you need to give that feel a little better. I tried rly quick to imagine how he looks so here : for me the last one works better (the one next to the original one which has a O over it, sry for the mess) the front legg is longer and i moved the knee to the right a little bit.

I would say mostly male, however I think there is potential for ambiguity from the shoulders and neckline - female clothing tends to have 'puffy' shoulder pad-type things and the straps of the backpack make the shoulders look a bit puffy. The shading on the chest gives a hint of breasts, but the overall stance is stooped which cancels that out a bit. Short hair is very suggestive of male.

All of this stuff is entirely based on gender stereotypes of course, but in pixel art, you have to rely heavily on that sort of thing because you're working with so little detail.

You haven't said which gender it is meant to be, but consider whether it matters or not.

If you want to make it more female, consider making the chest a little more pronounced and perhaps lengthening the hair a little.

If you want it male, consider straightening up the posture a little and changing the shadow on the torso, and tweaking the shoulders/bag straps a little, maybe just lengthening the sleeves a little might be enough to make it more male too.

It might also help to increase the contrast in colours in the bag vs the shirt - the dark colour and the use of green makes the objects a little less distinct.

I like the character though - the shadow is a great touch too.
