Hello to all Pixel Pros, Pixel Amateurs and Pixel-enthusiasts!



Frankie's Casual Pixel Shack is every Friday night at 8 PM EST!
I start it on my Twitch Stream and then update this topic here.
You don't need to join the stream for this or anything, but I think it's more fun to do this live. Whether you joined the stream or not, feel free to post your art in this topic here!

I believe a great way to practice pixel art is to grab existing art someone else made and work with it. This is something I suggested many times to people asking me for advice in the past. Grab a screenshot from an old NES game and play around with it!
It can really help new artists to get rid of the blank page problem, it gives people a reason to observe professional art closely, it provides context and inspiration, it gives the artist a color palette and a pixel art style to experiment with, and its also just a whole lot of fun!

So let's get to it, I'm gonna try and make this into a weekly thing!
If you are familiar with it, this is a bit like Pixelation's Commercial Critique challenge, just... casual. Don't feel like you need to mimic the style of the original perfectly, or improve on it etc, just have some fun. Of course, feel free to mimic the style or even improve on it all you like though.
They will usually be 8bit games, but I might also dip into 16 bit occasionally!

Yesterday night on my Twitch, I made a first little attempt at this using a screenshot from NES classic Faxanadu.

It was a great success, many people joined in despite this being an impromptu little event improvised at the end of an unrelated stream. Here is the original, virgin screenshot and my few goofy additions next to it. Doesn't that look fun?

I focused on monster sprites, but you could work on the tiles if you like. Some people on the stream modified the player character, too.

Just spent a little time putting together a good screenshot for the next game. Starting the stream soon, will be drawing a little logo for the event until it starts.

My idea was that you're a guy in an old diving suit and shoot fish and things with your harpoons. eventually it turns into body horror stuff like this as you go deeper

I wasn't able to start with the rest of the folks, but I am pretty happy with how this week's turned out even if it's nothing fancy.

Just put in a big ol monster, based off the game's final boss. Drew it by memory at first, then tweaked the sprite with a screenshot later.

Added a few creatures in the bricks to get myself started, but then I realised the candles looked like eyestalks. Behold the candle-mimicking snail, with literal eyes of flame.
