Dear all :)
I am new to pixel art, and I am joining this community simply to get to know people, and to get feedback on my art. I have tried to submit my art, but it was rejected with reason: "We're sorry to inform you that your submission does not meet our quality standards or the art needs revision for some miscellaneous reason." I mean, I am not surprised, I am ONLY JUST getting started, and what I do is 100% amateur. Still, if you could please take a look and let me know what you think, what I should be focusing on etc? For the record, I am creating all art on my real Amiga 1200, using Deluxe Paint... I wonder if I am the only one? Cheers! Alix ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Could you please show your pieces in the thread instead of linking to them? Pinterest is awful for looking at pixel art.
You can upload your work to imgur or another image host, and then put the image link (the one ending in .png or .gif or whatever format you use) in [img][/img] tags. Keep the images at 1x zoom, the forum has a zoom feature (click to zoom in, ctrl+click to zoom out). |

I have uploaded my images to imgur, and updated my original message to include the links. This time I have also kept the original sizes... previously I had "upscaled" by applying a 200% image resize... I wonder if this is why the images were rejected? Cheers :) |

Upscaling certainly does not help for getting your art approved no. However, the controller images are still not very interesting by themselves, so I'll send them back. As for the other two, they can be accepted, but perhaps you want to receive some feedback here first and improve even more?

I agree that my art is not original at all... for now I am mostly copying stuff, in order to learn the tools (Deluxe Paint) and the techniques (colours, gradients, perspective etc.)... I thought I could get feedback on my work on this website, to get better, but it sounds like I have to put my work elsewhere, and then link to it on the forum... And still, no one is really saying anything, so maybe I won't bother, I don't know :) Thanks for your message anyway, much appreciated! |

The forum can be a little slow to generate replies. Another reason you haven't had much critique is probably because there honestly isn't that much to critique. Your work looks solid. I like that you're using mostly flat colours - many beginners start out too complex with a lot of shading etc., and get lost in the rendering. The only "jagged" lines I could see (topmost clouds in first picture) probably serve a purpose. There's some banding in the grass on the second picture, but the contrast in values is so low that it's not very noticeable.

Sorry for the frustration, kinks needed to be worked out first! Now we can focus on the art, I suppose :)
I'll talk about your pink skyline I do see some low hanging fruit, which is the color. Why a straight, very saturated ramp? It hurts my eyes a bit! I made a quick example lowering the saturation just a tad ![]() Also, are you sure that the lights on top of the buildings are such important features, that they should be visible from afar, in an extra color even? The right tram is a nice copy of the left tram, even copying the unintended bright outline! The window patterns seem a bit random. Why are there two buildings where the window pattern is diagonally cut off? Also, windows are not often the most representative feature of a building, unless it is dark and the lights are up inside the building. Look up some pictures of skylines and skyscrapers, and see what the defining features are! What kind of shapes appear which are recognizable from far away. The windows make it look a bit like a childrens drawing. At last, what time of day is it? And what are those clouds doing? Is the camera hovering in the middle of the cloud and can we see partially underneath it, and partially over it? Again, references might help here. Good luck! |

Thanks both for your feedback, much appreciated!
I do need to learn to master colour, hue, saturation etc... I have seen a tutorial on this forum, I will follow it. I agree that the buildings look a bit "childish", and I couldn't quite explain why... it's the windows, it's it... they are too blocky. Thanks! |

I can't figure out why all of them have been rejected. They look nice to the eye, even the pink orgy.
About that piece, maybe the size of the windows of some of the distant buildings isn't akeen with the distance. |

The 2 big ones have been accepted now :) Thanks for your feedback regarding the size of the windows... you are right, noted! |
