Hey guys! Been a long time since I've posted or done pixel art. I've started a piece of my white werewolf character, and I'm unsure if I'm taking it in the right direction in terms of lighting and background detail. I really don't know how to make the beams of light realistic/work in general

I'm using DB's 32 palette.
Would love any and all constructive crit as I'm really stuck!

I think the background's off to a good start, though the light rays feel more like objects than light overlapping a scene because the details in them seem to follow the edges of the rays. I think light rays read best if they're essentially palette-swapping whatever's behind them to lighter colours.

I keep mis-reading the nearer arm as having a very thick wrist because it blends with the leg behind it and because the hand, leg, and leg all meet in the same spot. I think it would read more clearly if the log was a little bit higher there, acting as a visual separation of the hand and leg.

Front arm's shoulder appears to be on the side of the torso, instead of its top. Google dog skeleton. Canines also appear to have protruding chest, compared to abdomen. Then again, it is a fantasy character, so what I know about it?

Thank you! So I should put in some more vegetation where the rays are and remove the conical shape so it looks less object-y?

That's a great solution to that, as I was really struggling to separate the arm and leg without ruining the lighting. I'll give that a go and post an update. Thanks once again!

Thank you. I definitely agree. I've just had a good look at some dog skeletons and I'm not sure how to go about amending the arm while still making the character look humanoid. Do you have any ideas? I know you're not here to do the leg-work for me but I'm genuinely stuck lol

I think the arm positions look fine for a humanoid. It all looks a bit off because the lighting on the chest makes it look narrow and dog-like, try making it flat and wide like a human chest. This would mean not having the light-dark gradient take up so much of the chest, that's what makes it look narrow and rounded.

Unfortunately I don't. That is part of concept design, which involves creative vision of the whole product. Obviously werewolf in Super Mario setting would be different from werewolf in D&D.

Slowly working through your feedback(s), at the moment focusing on eliminating the 'form' of the rays by filling in the background with vegetation to catch the light instead. Still on my list is to adjust the werewolf's chest to be more anatomically satisfying.

Here's a current update as I work through the BG:

Thank you both for your advice so far!

Still a bit stuck with the BG, I don't want to over-complicate it :(

I don't think you need to do much more on the background other than perhaps remove some of the outlines in the bottom right area, and reduce the thickness of the shadows on the leaves (leaves are pretty thin, so they don't look right with thick shadows). It doesn't need more detail than this.

Be careful with the leaves in the background right behind the werewolf's head, they have high contrast and are clashing for attention. Is there any possibility of using a slightly darker orange so that it blends better between the brown and mid=yellow?
