Hi everyone! I've been working on making a variety of pixel people, and I'd love to get some feedback on whether I'm heading in the right direction! Here's my current girl, a deadpan, overworked grad student.
![]() Some places that I would like feedback: - Her hair! She has a braid over one shoulder, and I've been struggling to render it. Can you tell that it's a braid at first glance? Likewise, I'm not confident about the shading technique on the rest of her hair, either - and the fact that her hair is black only makes this harder. - Her pose, especially in the neck/shoulder region. My previous character in this style had a wide dress and long hair, which smoothed the transition between the big head and the small body, but because this character has a distinct hairstyle and a form-fitting dress, I want to make sure that the contrast isn't too stark. - Style consistency! This lady is intended to be in the same general style as this piece. Obviously, they'll look different to some extent because they're different characters, but ideally, I'd like them to look like they could be from the same game. Here are the two sprites next to each other for a quick comparison! (Don't worry about the color palettes having a distinct look, specifically the mismatch in purples - I'm more interested in shapes at this stage.) Do they seem consistent, while still looking distinct? ![]() Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! I really appreciate it. |

Overall I think it looks quite good, and you are heading in the right direction. I was able to tell it was a braid.
As for the shading on the hair, I agree it could use some work. Right now it feels a bit too "dotty", which kind of makes it look like it has the texture of granite instead of hair. I would try to make the shading more "strand-like", with mostly lines/stripes and only having dots at the transition from one shade to another. Here's a fairly apt reference image that might help showcase a good shading technique for hair: ![]() As for the other two things you asked for feedback for, I think her pose looks good as it is, and the style is quite consistent with the previous character. |

Thank you so, so much for that reference image -- that's an incredibly helpful illustration, and give me lots of ideas for sure!
