I am trying to learn how to create grass tiles that look nice. I have a lot of trouble with vegetation, and feel it's really hindering me from progressing in game development.
It's very difficult choosing colors that are suitable for backgrounds and have enough contrast with foreground characters without clashing, but texturing grass and stuff without it coming out boring or tiled is my bane. Here's an example of some tall grass. It's very much in progress, and maybe there's just a better way. ![]() I feel like the shading isn't terrible, but it feels boring right now. Maybe I need to add more elements so that it isn't just grass? Maybe some alternate versions of the tile, with stone or broken earth? There seems to be some great artists here, so if anyone has suggestions please help. Thanks for reading this and taking the time to look at the wip. |

Pallet does big things, I think this is lacking in yellow and blue specifically. I'd suggest drawing it like you would hair. NO SCRIBBLY.
Here's an extremely low effort example ![]() |

Thank you, this helps.
I had planned to work on this today and update, but my tablet is flickering on and off so I think I need a new cable for that. Before it started acting crazy I tried shifting the hue of the shadows toward blue and the lighting more toward yellow, but that didn't work so I will try adding new colors of grass and maybe leaves and stone that have variations of blues and yellows. I think that might do the trick! I will change it and update as soon as I can! |

Is this a background of some kind? Or a tile? It seems to be a fairly high resolution, which might be part of the difficulty. I think the grasses are not very well defined and consist of only one color which gives it a scribbled and rushed look. I made an edit to help demonstrate: ![]() Try to make each blade defined and recognizable as a blade of grass instead of single pixels, and reduce single-pixel noise. Grass tends to curve downwards the taller it gets so I usually add curves. I also like to start the shaft of the grass as a dark shade and go lighter the further up it goes. I understand the difficulty with drawing grass though, I still have the same trouble.
