So I'm doing a little nano bat for the fun of it and I can't get the flying quite right. To me this just looks odd. >_<

Anyone have any suggestions? I've looked at a bat in flight and it wasn't really head on. I'm going for cartoony, but cartoony also has to look semi-realistic, you know?

When you stretch out your arms to fly, you bend your elbows so your hands are parallel to the ground. Do that with this bat.

Edit: w and e are too close together.

Looks better, but I'm not sure if that's how they fly or not.

yeah the whole wing flaps, and you should try to make it partially trunded to the left. and if you are going to give it an out line, it should be red. and the head really shouldn't be that big.

haHA! Fil_razorback ftw.

and when the wings go down, the body would go up, 'cause the wings would be pushing the body up through the air, as far as I understand. Go look at movies of birds taking flight, maybe.

YOU ARE!

Semi-realistic means... well... partially realistic, so I figured realism MIIIGHT as well be used as a source.

And yes, birds soar, whereas bats glide. I think. I don't honestly know if there's a difference, but I love to ramble too much to not say anything.

I don't want the bat to look real. If I did, I would have drawn a body and not just a chibi-like head. I'll work on the wings and post when I've updated. But right now it's finals week and I'm in the process of getting my dorm packed up and put into a storage unit so this is going to have to wait a week or so.

The wings seem to be going in rather than up and down... i found this on the metal slug ripped sprites archive thing and it may help: http://www.mslugdb.com/main/gallery/sprites/critters.html (there's one in the bottom right) Well, i know it's not the best way to reference but yanow..

Tis pretty cool nevertheless, reminds me of the bats in zelda.

I'm not sure how necessary that detailed animation of a bat is. If it's supposed to be not that realistic, I think it could pass off as a bat flying. You could do it that way but you'd be making the animation more complicated with more frames and more movement and stuff.

I think.. if the bat is flying, rather than preventing it'self from falling, which it looks like, I think the wings should pan down a little more.

ooooo.

That's interesting. Taking Skull's comment in mind as well, I may redo the wings completely. He does look like he's just trying to keep up, rather than just flying.

I took away some of the cartoonyness.

Larwick, you suggestions really helped me with how bats fly, I think.

I made it smaller, but I definately like it better now.

Further crits?

Its still doing the same thing, when his wings go up his body should go down and vice versa.

the center of gravity always wants to stay at the same position

Thanks. :) I thought it would be much better if his head were smaller. And I fixed the flying discrepancy based on what Psychotic_Carp reccomended.

I think I'm finished. :)

Thanks. But keep in mind, birds fly differently than bats, I would think. Since bats are lighter and their wings are shaped differently.
