Its not bad for a first time attempt. :)
The major issue in this piece is the lighting, as Im sure you've probably guessed. The sun (which is a bit dull, btw) is behind the character, so if thats your light source, then the majority of the front of the character should be shaded. The lighted parts would be on the far right side of your character, and only the very right edge. Thats not to say that the rest of him should be in one shade only. Ambient and reflected lighting from his frontside will give him some definition on his front too.
Keep at it, and welcome to PJ! :)

I think this would further be improved if you fix the outline of all things to a cleaner look. The sleeves of the shirt are way to random and have a jaggy finish to them. Not a bad first attempt, welcome

Yeah, make the outline first, then add base color, then lights and shadows with contrast.

Outlines have to be 1 pixel thick, and keep at 1 pixel thick in the corners too

As usualy, thanks... I probably spent maybe 5 or ten minutes touching it up...I think I got it all.![]() Okay, so if it needs anything else, post.
If you think its good enough to be on the pixeljoint.com gallery, post.
xD I doubt that its good enough for the gallery now.

I think that in order to get the basics down, you should start with smaller pieces and slowly begin to apply the techniques you learn to pieces this size or larger. As for this piece, once you get the lines down, try to decrease some of your colors saturations and tweak the hues a bit. The shading on the left side of the hair is strange though; the long vertical line is very different than what would be expected for the hair's shape.

Thanks. I did fix the hair's shape and the shading,(I think) but, as I said before, I'm a kid, so I don't know what saturations and hues are :P So, um, tell me and I can fix it.

Wikipedia and google are your friends. It shouldn't take long to research what you need.

Hmmm...
I think I get it.
If it's not done with that stuff, just tell me.
![]() I didn't fix much of it but I wasn't too sure where else it could be fixed...

I think the colours are much nicer now. However the hair highlight colour is just like the sky, so what i would do is to get rid of that colour, get a lighter colour for the hair highlights, and AA them using the colour of the sky.
You could also lighten the highlight colour of the top so it's easily seen and more depth is shown (obviously better shading will help this too)
The sun looks tonnes better with a more reddish hue, which i'm sure you can notice. Edited by Larwick - 08 September 2006 at 1:11pm |

One more tip, if you think about it hair comes from the scalp and is grouped into fins into anime. Try desiging hair from the scalp out, meaning think how the bottom roots gradually extend from the head rather than sit atop the head.

Okay, so I have no idea what AA is and I'm doubting that you can look that up, so, um, tell me.
As for the hair coming from the roots thing, I didn't fix that because that would kinda feel like restarteing the picture...But I WILL pixel by that law next time. :D

Unfortunately this isn't the proper pixel art definition (i believe pixelpedia is down currently) so it may not be much help... but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-aliasing I think St0ven has a good tutorial or so somewhere on his site you could find: http://www.spriteart.com
And there's nothing wrong with restarting if you really feel the need. You will of course have learnt from this, and can put all that new found knowledge into refining your newer pieces.

Oh, yeah, spriteart.com, I like that place :D
Heh. AAing is now my favorite part of pixeling.

You really haven't got AA right atm. Read the tutorials closer and try again, i'm too tired right now to help you further, but i thought i'd let you know.

I think you have to re do the hair completly.
It's just a huge messy clump on the top of his head. It doesn't look like hair at all. |

NOOO! I just posted 2 really long posts and gone they are :( So, yeah, I know the hair style is freaky, it bothers me, but its the only one that I felt a tiny bit satisfied with from the ones I tried. The AA problem I think I fixed, but I didn't get to read the whole tutorial, so...![]() >_<

I'm afraid it's not fixed atall, but the hair shape is getting better. I advise you don't try AAing until you've read and understand the tutorial properly. And of course, surely if it doesn't look good.. it can't BE good? If you can see, what you've added as 'AA' just makes it jaggedier and the pixel placement is very random and unclean.

The hair is just... everywhere, the head is mishapen and a bit too far to the right I think, the neck is really long, the eyes are really unappealing, the shoulders are very square like, actually the torso is blocky everywhere, you have a lot of similar colors that you don't know what you're doing with it seems, I can't tell if those are mountains or a body of water or both in the background, folds on the shirt aren't thought out at all (especially that bold dark one right along the chest) and it's all just really messy.
I'd suggest cutting down your colors to about 4 and get the main idea down and then work from there. I'd also suggest getting rid of the sun, if it really were positioned there then the objects in the planes in front of the sun would practically be silhouettes in reality. I made a quick edit, to give you ideas and to maybe give you a sense of what might work out better etc. ![]() Edited by Blick - 10 September 2006 at 12:10am |

i think you are trying too hard for the anime look... and if i had to guess, it looks like you are expecting pixel art to be a fast process, even though it is once you get good, when you start, it is anything but fast. i am coming to that conclusion because it is obvious your not carefully palcing your pixels and missing alot of spots.
imo, you should consider starting from scratch... find some good reference pics (dont trace, just use them for reference), and start over from scratch. start with just the character line art, no background, just the character using your references and advice given here. then post that and we will crit it, then you can move forward step by step. it is alot easier to teach from the beginning, then it is from 3/4 way through. thats my 2 cents |

So, thanks for all the C&C, I came up with just a person from a back view. I'll add color and the, uh, background once the person is complete. I figure if someone says, "The background is shaped weird," Then another says, "The person is too small compared to the pole he's holding," Then I'll edit one thing too quickly so I can move on to the other, so then it'll look more horrible than it is.
The thing he/she (I haven't decided yet) is holding is a hiking stick or whatever, they're hiking somewhere...
The weird thing on top of their head is a sort of hat, maybe a berrat (spelling?) or one of those weird hats, not sure of the name.
