So, I want to do a small piece that I can continue to work on and, hopefully, improve upon with suggestions from you peoples. :P I just did a small coloring of Tremulant's line art: 1. ![]() ![]() 2. ![]() ![]() New Lines: ![]() I think he's pillowshaded and just... shaded oddly. I don't know. I'll fix it in awhile but I'm putting it up for crits! Edited by Aleiav - 17 December 2006 at 2:38pm |

Ahh, the start of something big!
You're right about the colours not making it pop, my suggestions to alleviate ( ![]() - kick the highlights up alot. It's my school of thought that you do not want a nice steady gradient from highlight to shadow; you want there to be a bit of a gap between the highlight tones and the shadow tones. This of course gives it tasty contrast, and effectively should make it "pop". - in coincidence with the above suggestion; deepen the shadows alot. As for the hat, you need to reconsider the 3D form of it. Look how youve shaded the bottom of it (which imo is pretty much correct), and compare this to how you shaded the top. There's just too much shadow. Theres no real sharp shadow tone for the purple. Try using the dark indigo youve got for it. That said, I think you should consider some palette unification. That is, define 1 or 2 deep shadow tones which can basically be used for shadow anywhere on the piece, and 1 or 2 highlight tones, which can be used as highlights anywhere on the piece. Then its really just midtones which define the colour of things. Just a suggestion, perhaps that is a little premature. Hue-shifting will really benefit this piece, too. But I pretty much always say that, heh. I am really not a fan of dithering in general. But your use of it pretty much doesn't offend me. It gives him a somewhat hairy appearance, which I think is good, but at the same time it is slightly interefering with the shading. You really need a highlight for the skin tones. Umm, yeah thats the C&C I've got for now. Hope you gleaned some usefulness from it ![]() |

Thanks for your reply EyeCraft. :D
Combining my PJ and Pixelation edits and crits... I completely redid it and came up with this: ![]() I like this one SO much better. I think the highlights on the hat might be a bit too much but... I wanna hear what you guys have to say. |

I think the hat has more much of a bright highlight on too dark of a background. Consider lightening the midtone and making the hue shift more consistent.

It's my approach that the darkest tone doesn't appear as an outline,
but simply as shadow. As such, it doesn't appear anywhere where there's
highlights. You're almost on that track with this new piece, but I'll
do an edit to show where I think it can be "perfected"...Okay I might
have gotten a bit carried away...
![]() ![]() A couple of palettes, and the legs are a bit retarded... Your palette's hue shifts were erratic; it's still possible, but you'll need to reduce saturation and maybe up or down value on the pink and blue to make it a more consistent ramp. You don't seem to have a solid lightsource defined for your piece. And yeah, don't use shadow tones where they shouldnt be...which is areas of highlight. |

god, why do you guys pwn me so hard. XD
@snader I guess I picked it because the blue was too bright and I liked the way it looked on the pants so I wanted to keep it... what would you suggest? |

Thanks for your help, EyeCraft.
I didn't want it to look too much like yours though. ![]() Edited by Aleiav - 09 December 2006 at 12:59am |

The new cook is fantastic! Good job on that.
But for the monster, I think you should implement a new highlight color, the contrast between the existing highlight color and base color isn't very high.. |

I brightened the highlights but I'm not sure if it made much of a difference:

The second highlight down in the ramp is the main issue, I kicked its value up a little:

Ah cool. Its pretty good, but there's seems to be too much midtone, I think there'd be more of a fade off into shadow starting at about halfway across his torso.
I dont think his right arm would be so lit, nor his nose, lips, or hair. This is all going off the position of the highlight on his left side. Otherwise, if you intend the lightsource to be more infront of him, most of the shading is fairly right, but the highlight needs to be shifted more towards center. I'd try working a little bit more blue into the shadows. Also the ramp you have displayed doesnt match the colours you have shaded the piece with. Looking forward to seeing more ![]() |
