alright, the sprite of me gangster style shooting was originally made for a sprite duel on PT, where we made a sprite with a custom style. so im making it into a mockup, and possibly one day it could actually be a real game (not commercial, of course, prolly just gonna make it with GM if i do anything). well, here it is in its early stages. im doing the foregrounds first before i do the backrounds, hes going to be shooting at a boss guy. anyways, without further stalling, i present my wip Edited by silent sniper - 23 January 2007 at 6:30pm |

No, he answered correctly. I was wondering why someone called a "silent sniper" would be using a pistol and standing straight and visibly. I think the topic could use a better title if there's no silence or sniping happening here.

-changed SS's right arm (i am a righty, but if i were ever to make a game of this, id just use flipped sprites)
-finished other guy
-made other guy 1px shorter

These could use some anatomy work, as well as several other, possibly more important (!!!) things.
The sprites need a lot more contrast and it's hard to tell what the ground is. Give the sprites blacks instead of the brown you have now; it makes them look dirty (as in covered with dirt) and it just sticks out. the ground could be helped with some texture or maybe a total change of material. You should add lighter highlights to your palettes and give the characters more dynamic poses. I don't know about you, but if I was being shot at by an automatic something, I'd get the hell out of there, not stand tall and straight as I'm riddled with bullet holes.
Also, about that automatic gun, generally stuff rotates, true, but the bullets usually only come out in one place. Unify the bullet streams, I'm trying to say.
The dithering on the health bar needs work (use fewer hues and colors maybe?) and the text isn't pixelled. Make your own; the text tool is for lazy people. The palette for the health bar border and the text is boring and unsaturated and will probably be lost in a background; I suggest a white or black, or something bordered with one of those colors.
Good luck improving these, and don't quit!

umm... actually... i DIDNT use the text tool. the part about them being dirty, that was actually what i ws going for. and once i start the background, the "ground" they are standing on will fit perfectly. i hope. as for... dynamic poses? waht does that mean? i probably am going to make a few more scenes of this battle, and probably an entire action sheet for my character. and im going to try that contrast thing, ad ill unify the bullets too. and change some more stuff

dynamic poses mean less stiff, more natural movement type poses - not like a wooden/plastic figure

you should fix the left arm , its a bit to static and stiff for someone who is shooting a pistol infront of a man with an uzi , at least some relaxed pose

@silent sniper: I'm sorry, I thought it was font-tool text. But that I even thought so is a sign that your text could use some spicing up and added originality. You could get a dirty effect more realistically and without making it look like you accidently replaced black with brown by giving them spots where dirt and dust have gotten on their clothes.
Leel and Bifur (wb biffy!) gave you the right info about dynamic poses. You can add some more interest and realism by giving the joints bends and trying to make the poses yourself, IRL. If it feels weird or you fall over, you'll have to change the character's pose. The IRL test helps determine balance and whether the position is feasible. The enemy with the big gun on the right looks like he has some serious balance issues; see how he's supporting all his weight on one leg and how it's not bent at all? That pose would be uncomfortable and near-impossible holding a gun that way. This stuff isn't really hard, but you do need to think it through and maybe make a fool of yourself standing in different poses for no apparent reason.

You don't probably need it closed, just edit the first post and change the title to signify that you're taking a hiatus from this piece to focus on a different part of it. You might even be able to use this topic for the "something else."
