And finally it was marked for revision. So, what could be the problem - personally I said everything I wanted with this pic. I think it not needs any extra colors and current palette seems just fine, so it may be outline or something...

Nothing is really happening here. Needless BG. Partial Black outlining. Little to no coloring/pixelling skills shown. It does have possibilities but this really is weak as shown. Form definition would help as would a defined lightsource. Leave as a WIP thread and fix it ;)

Small icon has all the graphics. I should give ink to my gallery, - thought individual post also has it, bot not bothered to check it - it's not.

It accented specialy to show what he does while waiting. I think that joke would be harder to find if it was dark grey - on some monitors it would be completely lost.

You mean it should be transparent?

as my current ideal of pixel characters, it would be pointless to give any lightsource.

Sorry, it may seem that I'm bitchin, but really it all just meaningless as that what is not in this picture, is not supposed to be in it - not all pixelart should be in Amiga or Square or SNK style with lots of shades and methods of dithering. I try to make it simple, yet effective - help me with that.

please post image, I'm not going through the trouble of giving you feedback if you won't even go as far as to upload it on photobucket.  It's just common courtesy.  Besides, often the rejected pixels don't fit in the preview itself, so if you want CC show us the picture.  Or at least hyperlink it.  Like I said... Just common courtesy.

Either outline the whole thing in black, or don't do it at all.  It just looks bad.  It'd work just as well with darker gray and darker green.

Shading shows depth. Depth helps readability.  With shading things, even cartoony things, are just more believable.

Ok, So, if I cited particular game as primer, let's make him more EearthBound-friendly.


Original(1) - I decided to make it free of any shadow (2-3). (2) - also added one, no, two pixels on right leg's trainer.
(3) - I felt that colour of shirt needs to be more groovy, I think on 3 it's better now. I was totally satisfied with colours of hair and decided not to change them.
(4) - too codemonkey'ish.
Then I tried to add that what I thought is essence of EB - something bizzare (5-7).

Then I took screenshot for reference.

EB extensively uses black outline, i outlined it similar on (8). Then shadows take it's turn. (9) - Colour for shadow in EB is almost the same as original skin colour but nearly twice as lower in contrast and darker (don't know how much - I experimented, and then decided to make it two points darker on (10)). I felt that nose would not be spare part with all that shadows. Also (still 9) made cheeks pink, added a pixel on left arm of T-shirt, changed color of trainers (as it looked strange in 1x). Now, T-shirt looked dull, so I decided to add two-pixel-wide line on the chest, experimented with colors, finished with another variant of pink on final edit (10), which, I feel, looks like the game I'd wish to play. But if it would be 8-bit Earthbound Zero (Mother in Japan), almost all of this would be lost (11)! And now I have no point afor a joke about irrelevant black outline, coz now it all relevant!
