Here's my rainy day weekly challenge WIP! Please tell me how it is so far, what I could fix, and what I could add.

Thank you!

Hello Quar,

Your rainy day is mostly repeating. The clouds, the rain, the water...
Try different shapes of cloud and probably make them maybe a bit
dark.
Most of the canvas is pretty boring. Try to imagine what can
happen to that figure. What he / she is doing.
You can add a large truck that splashes him or is about to
splash him.

You can do funny, or make it dramatic.
When I first saw the challenge it had me thinking of this
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/5546.htm
Which really makes a great example what a pixel can do
to the heART.

Good luck with the challenge.

Best regards from

It's slightly less repetetive now, but the piece still doesn't have any focus. The little creatures off to the side seem distinctly peripheral, like they're an extra detail complimenting an as-yet unrealized central (by which I do not necessarily mean XY position) focus. I hope I'm making sense. It just feels empty.

EDIT- Just looking over the piece again, I think even having the clouds take over the sky, make them big and powerful and interesting to look at, that would work to focus the piece, ya know?

EDIT 2: A NEW HOPE- Just look at my member title. Clearly I can't be wrong.

I was intending for the two creatures to be the focus in there. Is there a way I could do that without changing their positions, or should I do that?

Firstly, to say that I am not a master of composition would be to flirt with reckless understatement. Having made that clear, I think they can maintain their positions if you a) make them stand out more (with different colors?) and/or b) make something lead the eye to them (the clouds somehow maybe?). Currently there is nothing to make them pop, nothing to make me feel like they're anything more than part of a backdrop. Once again I can only hope I making sense.

Thank you very much for the help!  I'll experiment with different things until I find something that works!

I tried my hand at a quick edit. It is strikingly bad on a number of levels:

I dunno. I was just messing around. Terrible clouds etc. But notice how the eye is drawn more to the little creatures? At least I hope the eye is. That's what I was shooting for anyway. I can't shake the feeling there should be a moon somewhere.

That's a nice edit, very helpful! I'll try something like that, although I'm not very good with clouds. Still, I'll give it a shot to make the background a little more detailed!

Thank you very much!

Hello Quar,

If you really, really want to have the two figures to the
right and still let them to have focus you need to change
the size and/or the color of them.

At this time anything that you will be putting in the
background will surely get the focus of the eye.
If there is mist/large clouds/dull background you
can have the focus of attention to the right.
But a mountain in the background will get probably
the attention of the eye unless it is really far away
and mixed with the other dull things in the background.

Personally I think you need a good story first before
you are attempting to pixel it. Let the story depict
what should be in the picture.

Here is an edit on how you can have the characters
get focus with the nice clouds and mountains from Hatch:

Good luck with your plan!

Best regards from
