    Posted: 22 July 2005 at 2:20am
Okay so I started on this ho hum... 3 weeks ago. I had planned to make the Pixelart Community totem pole project, so i decided to make the base for it. last year this really awesome artist named Eyodious made the base, you can find it here at the old totem pole made sometime in July of last year. Sure it was a good base last year, but this year i want to go bigger and better. So I started drawing up concepts. I came up with the one below, scanned it, and pixelled the outline. Since some of the totems are freakishly tall this year, I knew that the base would have to overpower it. So instead of making the base relatively small like I'd envisioned, I made it freakishly huge. So I pixelled it and started shading when I figured out that I'd never get this done. I mean c'mon, look how friggen huge it was... way too ambitious. So I decided to quit this design and make a smaller one using the same people. And by smaller, I mean no lava, less people, thinner totem.

See? See how big the base was? So right next to it to the right I show you the new base, which will be 4 of the people taken out of that other base and shaded. So ignore everything on the left. On the right, the current one I had to shift the woman/man's position and re-line them. Then since that torch girl was waaay too small I had to resize her and am going to re-line her as well. I'm not sure how the new base will start, but I was thinking he could be coming out of a hole, or something like that. So any ideas there would be good.

As you can see I had the guy holding the girl and the girl shaded, but unfortunately their position was changed so that they'd fit vertically on the new base. I kept the bottom guy's shading of course because well, I really like his shading and I'll keep it that way. Only, I need a good way that the guy on the bottom will be holding on to the girl's legs to hold her up. The delema I have right now is what the transition is now going to be from the ground to the bottom of the base, from each of the people to each of the other people, (example, locking arms and legs to make sturdy) and from the torch girl to the start of the next totem on the pole. So I any ideas on that would be greatly appreciated as well.

I will post updates momentarily to show progress etc. Any help with ideas and shading would be really appreciated.

Now this is why I like comming to pixel-joint.  Every once in a while you'll come across something as amazing as this that makes your visit all worth you while and worth your post.  I just wish i could give C+C to something like this more often.

first off, I do like the new colours you gave it compared to the old yellowish ones...much better.  The dithering is great and the overall execution of you plan is superb.  Kudos to you for actually drawing out your plan first (even if it didn't turn out as you thought it would).  I also like the theme of your design - very well done.  Now with that said - on to the C+C...  (mainly dealing with anatomy)

the dude on the left has 3 tricepts....and 2 bicepts (3 if the top lump isn't his deltoid which should wedge between the bicept and tricept in a tear-drop like shape)...while the new totem design - the bottom guy has 2 tricepts when hes only supposed to have one.  and their belly buttons are under their six pack instead of between the 2nd and 3rd row.  the legs have a few muscel groups in there that don't really exist.  the pectorial muscels dont properly connect to the deltoids like they are supposed to (most noticible in instances where the arms are raised).  also the oblique area is kinda lacking in form.  The hands could be bigger and the eyes should be more towards the center of the head.  the forhead also shouldn't bubble over that much and should have a flat surface for the most part.  I think that covers most of it.

If you dont understand fully of why i said something or what i'm talking about - just tell me and i'll wip out an edit or an example to show ya.  but again, great work!  just with some tweaking it can be even more great.

-Dan

Hey indigo, thanks for your reply and CC :) I've seen a lot of your stuff and judging by your work alone I know you must totally know all about anatomy :) (your work is awesome by the way)

So yeah I didn't understand a few of the things you were talking about, lol. I know absolutely nothing about anatomy and such, so any diagrams would be great. I didn't even use any references, I just went from my head and went by the wierdo sketch. And yeah I just put wierd muscles in places to make them all buff, I have no idea where anything goes So yeah any help from pictures or a more invasive CC would be awesomeness and appreciated.

You should totally join the totem btw

It looks really good, but i think that the girls hair that you filled in seems a little off, but i don't know what. Over all the whole thing is really good.

^ About the girls hair, I think it would look way better if you added strands of hair then fill in the shadows and highlights, like the way blue does hair.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=515&am p;PN=2 <-- that a great example of what im talking about.  Other then that, I cant spot anything else that hasn't been said already, its looking great so far :D
Im on vaction...woohoo....from the 9th-16th.

i agree with rifts, the first one way kicks ass.  you have already got a little bit done, and if you finished it it wood be a really stunning base.

That's because the hair shading was temp. Plus, the big base in the middle I'm not even worried about anymore, and moving to the base on the right. Thanks.

The base on the left is great and all, but I think that the base on the right would turn out much better.  Are still planning on adding lava?

I just found a great tutorial today about human anatomy, showing where the muscles are and explaining how they would react when being activated or relaxed. If you're ambitious about this piece I suggest reading

I don't have a clue if it's a correct tutorial, but it sure looks like the creator of it knows what he/she's talking about.
