Got the 'quality standard/revision needed' message.
Ok, my work my not be top notch, but it's a little confusing to see it rejected while other pieces of similar quality get approved. It's a little tempting to take the low road right now and start pointing to other pieces of art and saying "Well at least it's better than that". But I won't resort to such childish antics... for now. ![]() I suppose my ego can take a little bruising for now. *sigh* No pain, no gain. What's wrong with these two? ![]() Just remember, not all of us can take giant leaps into greatness, some of us need baby steps. ![]() Edited by greenraven - 24 September 2007 at 6:10pm |

then please, take a second look at the step you're triying to do. look carefully at your second image, and be honest with yourself: it that animation smooth enought? does that look convincent?
answer those questions first. and take off those thoughts of "pieces of similar quality got aproved"

I was 9/10th of the way for adding the first. The public scoring for that was low. The general membership must have thought it too simple? The only thing for me that was'nt working was really the color choices which for some reason makes it appear primitive. That the cube is not centered bothers me as its such a simple thing to have noticed. Naturally the cube is iso and you have land and sky. Isometric does NOT ever have a horizon line so on the technical thats a fail. The flower bloom is cute but they didn't wither and die, merely disappear. The sun has a 1px diameter jump, wtf. I understood it as an animation study/test for yourself but the iso cube is as boring as a fry in McDonald's.
The second is a total disaster. The flame is Oekaki and not PA, reason enough right there. The green lineart is very unrefined and messy. If you attempt something like this each and every pixel must be clean and planned. That the arms are not well defined defeats the purpose of making a silhuoette(?) That its wearing a cloak seems like you were merely lazy in drawing the legs. Yes, its a mage, wizard, blah, blah, blah. Still it looks weak. The 50/50 dither on the interior is a total waste since its a color you don't have elsewhere and color conservation is not what this pixel seeks or seems to be about. Pick a color when this happens or experiment with a dither technique that has some personality to it or shows the attempt at trying something new and fresh. At the very least cool looking. The leap to greatness has nothing to do with what I think you refer to. Placing each pixel with loving care and in ways that entertain us when zoomed is the true mark you seek not the overview subjective matter. You must seek the way of the pixel on the pixel level. Pixels have to look great zoomed. The simpler the piece the tougher this becomes, ironically. Your ego should suffer ZERO because you have a sense of humor, you are getting involved. You comment everywhere therefore you must realize its not personal. Most members of PJ, I feel confident in saying want to come here and faint over everything and feel anger at our own lameness. It inspires. Its never personal and regardless of the implied tone of anything ever said. We want to help each other get better to both further our crazy underground artform and to be amazed by the beauty of pixelart. pwnage comes with patience, practice and planning. <--- for your signature Edited by jalonso - 24 September 2007 at 6:47pm |

Thank you Jalonso, that was actually the kind of in depth feedback I was looking for.
Yeah, I was mostly testing out a bunch of stuff in that first one. Making the flowers wither should be simple enough. And I think I can put the sky and the earth coming in at a diagonal angle. As for the sun growing a bit, I'm not sure what to say about that one myself. My main problem with the second one is that I wanted to have the mage part of the shadows, not to be seen except for the magical aura that surrounds him. I tried having him all black with a green outline, but that was even worse than it is now. As for the flame it was actually inspired by something I saw here... One of 7even's pieces. I really liked that blade and wanted to see it animated. Obviously it didn't turn out so well. I think I'll try move that cube up a step from a french fry to a big mac. As for the mage, it'll take some more experimenting. Ok, back to the old drawing board. |

Ok, ok, I can take a hint, no horizons. But one day I'll rise in ranks around here, and on that day I'll make iso horizons a new fad.
![]() Guess I'll go and take out that diagonal sky now. |

Ok here's version 2 of the the amazing little cube...
![]() I figured if I'm going to overhaul it might as well take the chance to try out a few more things. If nothing else, than I got some more experience out of this. While I wait for feedback, I'll get started on the mage again. |

Way better than the first try ! And you've finally given correct proportion (after growing) to this cube. Last transition (going to full grey cube) is nice...
Keep da pixel struggle... ^^ |

I do hope I caught you in time to perhaps play with the outlines a bit. They are so 'outliny'. C'mon play with them some..

The edges that stick "towards" the viewer in 3D space should generally be highlighted in isometric pieces. It's like this because in real life, instead of things having perfectly fine corners (you'd cut your fingers open on the edges of your keyboard keys) they're bevelled and that bevel reflects light. Example (Left is simplified, right is antialiased as I would do personally. Don't antialias yet though until you have all of ise mastered up to that point. It gets in the way if you need to change things, which you will, and should be a final step.):

oh yes, almost forgot: remove the green flash of the frame and refine that oekakish green thing that appears after the rise of the brown shape.

Thanks Monkey, I'll go redo things then. And I'll go ahead and remove that flash frame Metaru.

Ok, I've done my best to fix up the whole thing and reset the transparencies, on all 85 frames.
![]() ![]() Unfortunately, this is as much as I'm going to have done with the outlines and shading. Because saving a GIF in MSpaint locks the color palette. Yes, I use plain ol MSpaint, because I'm hardcore like that. ![]() Actually there are two main reasons why I use paint: 1) My laptop is (insert your choice of foul words), don't have the memory for the high quality programs. 2) I'm not made of money. Which, I guess, accounts for that first reason. ![]() I think this is as much as I'm going to get out of this little test box, but I'll go ahead and wait until this evening to submit it. |

No shame in MSPaint whatsoever. $$$ not the object, many choose it regardless.
