Long time admirer of work here, first time pixelator. I just joined anyways, this is my very absolute first firggin' line art.
I didn't have any trouble with at all. I did have a ref.. somewhere.... And i read up about all the pixel lineart tutorials in this forum. Meh, anyways i'm having trouble with the colouration... At the moment i've just blurred a few colours intogeather to get a feel of what it may looklike... Anyone got any good ways of colouring? Or explaining... :S (oh, ignore the crappy teeth. I'm going to fix them) ![]() |

Hey another New Zealander. Good to have you aboard.
The lineart you have there isn't the best. I suggest you find your reference and try again. Try to tighten the outline and add in more features before colouring. Alternatively you could colour block the image (like you have done underneath) and pixel over that on another layer. As for colours, with a piece this size I suggest 8-12 shades of grey blue or perhaps slightly yellow/off white. If this is one of your first pieces then I think you should shrink the image to half or a third of its current size just to make it easier for yourself. |

This is good for a first piece imo.
True, it is kind of big though. I think when most people colour, they fill in the midtone colour first, and then start shading. If you really read all the tutorials as you said, you have come across some shading techniques. |

Indeed it is relatively big as i thought, but i hoped i'ld try
something larger just for a project. Yet as it seems, it is definatly a
pain, and shrinking it would/should be a better idea. Also, the
outline colour will change, it's just red atm so it stands out...
Edit to come, thanks for the help. |

So the lightsource is the opposite side? I dunno, it'ld kinda be wacked...
Ok, here's a shrunken version, with another colour restart. Bad colouring atm i know i know, just the basics first trying to get good shapes for shading and testing out some dithering...I also dunno if i should go with a yellow or grey palette... ![]() |

don't fear size! if you wanted to work at the original size then I say
go for it! There's a lack of good, large, pixel art and it's a crying
shame to see you shrink something that had potential at it's original
scale.
that being said, skulls aren't so grey-y, take it from a girl who spent two years digging up bones (archaeology) bones get pretty darn yellow, even orange eventually, when they're exposed to stuff, so you might want to tint this more 'lello. |

Saiklor, your a grave robber, haha. As for teh skull as it is now, it has an interesting style and I think the shading is pretty nice. Work on the colors and this piece will look pretty sweet. |

For every second spent wondering if you can do something, you could spend 2 seconds doing it.

Indeedy, which is kindda... Hard, trying to find the matching yellows
that would go well... But yea, thanks for the support, i think when i
get better i'll make a bigger version. With maybe more abstract colours
or something. As i don't have enough experience to tackle on something
so large, and dedicating time into it i believe may put me back when/if
it *fails* if you know what i mean...
Anywhoe, i'll stick to this since the 'circular' part of the skull was a lot easier to get on the smaller version and to make it all fit. Ok, what i'm going to do: Finish up this, then go for a yellow-ish version. Thanks for the help. So far: No teeth i believe. It's kinda hard to do them ![]() ![]() |

Impressive dithering dude. Good colour theory too.
You're not using your colours to their full potential though ![]() Also try some sel-out on the outline there. Very good if this is your first piece. |

Thanks, and the sel-out is quite hard, i don't think i got the jist of
it at all. Since school started and all again. Too tired to read and
concerntrate properly lol...
'n Ya, it's my first piece. I've doodled around with two others (like those small tutorials that make you make a small 5X5 block in ISO, where i realised ISO wasn't my strong point lol...) I think there may need to be one more final edit before this is finish, it look's like somethings missing. I dunno... ![]() Anyways here: ![]() |

nyehh.. needs more depth/contrast. Right now it's very... flat. and it looks partially beveled. Shade! Depth!

I like the dithering and I see you put quite a lot of effort in this,
but ryan is right - the dark parts, specifically the column shadows
look awkward.
You need to put more shading in the rear lobe and the (our) left side of the jaw. |

Pretty groovy so far, but I agree with Ryan-gfx. Depth would be rocking! And also with Saiklor, yellowish tinge would look more realistic. And is it just me or does the skull loook a bit too long? |

the biggest thing about this are the fact that a human lower jaw is not attached to the skull, theyre separate allso, youre focusing to much on the shading of specific area, and not looking enough at the whole, thus losing depth |
