Ok, I'm beginning work on backdrops and level objects for this shmup I'm working on, and I've done a mockup of the elements I'm working on right now, but it looks like the plane and the small chunk of debris are on different depths, what do you think?

EDIT 2:

Some little dead friendly ships to brighten up the atmosphere

I'm just showing one image since they are fairly big, here's links to the old ones:

i think the depth illusion is the side-effect of the debris having a much more detailed and less contrasty shading than the plane's sprite. (not to mention it being a lot darker)

edit: apart from that functionality problem, the pixel job is exquisite. :)

Another little update, finishing off the smaller little bits before I get to work on the big momma of it- the backdrop. So some little wrecked ships to intimidate the player, hehehe.

It's funny the atmosphere is actually an epic space battle going on.

I've got big plans for the backdrop.

That's good! I was concerned they would look too repetitive.

Sure will. It's the typical horde of space junk/asteroids being hurled at the player and they have to manouver and shoot their way through

This might take a little more work, but I think you should make one more of each kinda of debree. I will make it look alot better and less repetitive. Other than that, this is absolutly incredible.
For every second spent wondering if you can do something, you could spend 2 seconds doing it.

Sigh you could be right there , so, many, piiiixeeeeeels...

I guess I probably will do at least 2 of each debris, it makes sense, I can tell ingame it would look very repetitive just from this 1 screen, lol.

Nice dithering on everything, but are the things with the yellow blades ships, or debris. Also, it might just be me, but it does look a little repetitave. I think it could look good if you took the largest one and inverted it horizontaly and/or vertically, and then reshaded it, it would look less consistent
