So yeah, I'm a random passer-by who has never had much activity around here, might be missing lots and whose opinion is not deserving of much consideration. But do understand my point before mocking me, please.

I've seen people plan and idealize around about the PJ Game for a few eras but from what it seems it still didn't get to work. Considering that there are very few indie games with a minimum of quality out there today, I'd think this one is the most promising I've ever seen with so many talented people around here, and I think I'm not the only one really eager to see the game running.

And the solution to all the loafing seems so simple I could not refrain from intervening with a little hope. I might be out of date with the reasons why this hasn't worked so far, but I thought a little bit of pushing forward wouldn't hurt. I thank you for reading up to this point before scolding me, now please keep on reading for my idea about this.

First about the programming, the results of lacking communication frequently scare me. While people on programming forums (like this game coding library) fight tooth and nail for the chance to code something with decent graphics, people here sometimes find doubt on how to write the game code. Well, this doesn't seem like the biggest problem, anyway, and if anything, it'd be the easier one to solve.

The second thing is the proper coordination of the art production problem, and that is a little bit bigger. I fail to see why this sir's idea was completely ignored or wouldn't work in any way. To my understanding, it could be done like normal weekly challenges (parallel to the normal weekly challenges, no need to stop them) but focused on the PJ Game. Each week someone (I don't know who defines the challenges around here) would decide something that needed to the developed, eg. this-character's sprites, or tiles for this-level. The entries could even be submitted in mock-up form (of course, with some way to get the tiles/sprites separately), and the first place would get to be used in the game. I's ought to take a few weeks before everything's ready, but a few weeks will never be more than a few years.

There's much more to it than coding and graphics, yes, but other than that nothing seems like it'd be much trouble to get done.

Any comments or ideas about this? I'd really like to see things get going around here as soon as possible, so even if you think my thinking is ridiculous, try to explain to me how; I'd really like to see the game finally done and I'd hate to see it die a few steps away from proper steady development.

As before, I share your opinion. It's a great project and a great challenge for anyone here on PJ. I just think nobody dares to take the responsibility. So if you would lead the project, I'll support you and I think loads of others will too.

I'm completely down for this, I just think someone who is very organized needs to step up to the plate & lead this project. This is a load of work for who ever decides to take charge.

I think this needs to get done, it is something that looms over the the heads of all PJ members. It is the one thing that has really never been close to completion. We need to do this, I think it would be an awesome way to attract more members if it had its own link on the front page.

Hell if it works out, who's to say we couldn't make more, and use different styles of game play....

Who are the big guys around here? Who decides about the weekly challenges? From what it seems everything (the levels and even the story) to be done is already pretty clear. Well, if trying to go the bureaucratic way defining who leads this and that didn't work, setting up a challenge once to try that out should suffice to see if it works well or not.

The weekly challenges are decided by the winner of previous challenges

Well first of all challenges need to be kept how they are. We don't need to turn this site into a game creation site. The challenges are for, well, being challenged by other artists ideas. There are other ways to go about having people do art for a game. I'm sure if the layout was good enough, people would submit art without needing a challenge to tell them what to do. Someone just start a post with sections.

I like challenges for a couple of reasons. Because it gives some sort of thrill to the people going into it, and it's not just the deadline that makes them not want to miss it and actually get stuff done, it's the feeling that people are all working together at the same time and everyone trying their best to impress the others. People like that kind of thing, I guess. At least I do.
Also, because whoever's deciding the challenges is going to have to do it in the act, it seems. That looks like where most of the blame goes, deciding what to do first when because there's too much to do. Well, it shouldn't be a problem if every now and then someone makes everyone else waste a week drawing stuff that won't needed at that time or even at all. The initiative is needed mostly, and missing a few tries doesn't hurt all too much.
But then, I'm completely against interfering with the normal challenges. This kind of thing could be ran in parallel (or maybe top-secret, different place, whatever), meddling with the normal weekly challenges wouldn't be needed at all.

there was lots done in the past... unfortunately last time i was here when the project was still running most of the "big guys" were still around... while i assume some people still check the forum now and then and sedge who runs PJ still looks after the main site... most of them seem to have moved onto pixelation due to the higher quality of critique and artists avalible there.... if this were to get started again i doubt it would be the same, you would have to investigate old threads and directly contact the people who were in charge of the old departments through the main site or pixelation... haveing being only very momentarily involved with the original i would be thrilled to see it completed... but someone would need to take charge in organiseing everyone.. contact me if you need any extra details.

I like shiny things, i do indeed.

Damn, if all that everyone actually wants is just someone to take the responsibility for everything, anyone could do that. Even I'd offer to do that, if people would trust someone with my post count.

Old ideas resurface again...
The English in this thread is bad, I don't really understand what the hell's going on.  I also don't see a ton of interest in this.

I remember working on this.
Fun times.
I'd love to work on it again (considering I'd have to be a boss)
I remember Krysis did a bunch of good work for the project.

I'm sure even the big guys lurk from time to time.
to be honest I haven't seen the craziest work come out of the forum lately though.
So I'm not sure if we have the experience on the forum anymore...

I am the jesus of PJ.
