It's been a while since I've made a doll. So I just wanted to try one again.
I found this idea from a DA contest nice to do, so I decided to participate. However, I see this more as a practice then a contest. I'd like your opinion on this one and maybe some advise on how to compose my color palette. ![]() Edited by cele1989 - 29 September 2010 at 4:47am |

IMO it needs a lot more contrast and definition and a lot of black outlines that could be softened.
An example:

Thanks dpixel for your edit.
In mean time I did do another edit. I think the shadows of the environment are much better. I just wanted to get general shapes right and colors right before I start detailing it. Because otherwise if anything changes I would have to redo the detail. I started doing some flower pattern on the dress, but then decided to wait. Also the dithering on the ground wasn't such a good idea, since I decided to change a part of the black by the dark green.

The way you have black shadows below the feet makes it looks as though she is floating. And the shadowing in general doesn't follow the lightsource.
I wouldn't make the shadows under the light and off in the distance pure black, because there's always some bounce light, and there's some shadow diffusion. So make those shadows softer. You could add some bushes and low-medium high plants in the background, like in a real forest. |

Do you suggest another color for the shadows then? I already have 22 colors in my palette. Isn't that going to be to much? I have to keep in mind to use a lot of greens.

I edited the color palette more towards green, because it was the assignment to work in 1 color shade. I picked green. I picked another color for the shadow and removed some shadow underneath the feet.
Please help me further...I'm stuck...

I think you need to make the lighting super dramatic to pull off the scene. Lots of shadow play. If the light is only coming from the lantern then the doll should be lit from it and not just the background. Something like so...
