I figure we should end up relatively humanoid. Cause... I'm not exactly sure, but www.zoggles.co.uk has a few examples of mascots, specifically the avatar wars animations. (go pixels - section menu) Maybe those will give someone an idea.

Do we have anything we want to aim for? The Zoggles dude is a wizard, some other guy was fire, another was a huge robot, but what would we be? Nerd, I know, but that's highly unflattering, and to truly be a nerd, we must depict ourselves as something with a whole lot of firepower. Or weapons.

Which prods the next point. Could we take Istvan's nerd and give it a giant robot suit, make him a transformer, make him part alien...

And I hope we could have something iso-able, for the iso sympathists. Plus we could use their skills -cough-pixelblink-cough-.

Personally, I think part alien would work well. And the pixel guy just seems to simple for my liking, hence the change in direction.

I know I am a bit late on this topic but not all of us are nerds. I may be the first to say it. I would fit the more metal, goth, punk area XD Oh hell I will be placed in the nerd section too XD Cool mascot btw. :)

Here's why I think iSTVAN's "nerd thing" works for me...

Pixel art has three consistent themes... art, computers and video games.  What better mascot for computers and video games than a nerd?  The art part is handled in an elegant way with the nerd juggling pixels.

A few people have suggested that we have a variety of banners so there's still plenty of room for more ideas.

TACW, most of us here arn't nerds, that just what people normally think of people that like computers. I play the guitar and drums, but I am also in all honors classes. Nerds are what people normally think of pixel artists as, even if there not. The nerd is a great mascot just because it has a cool feel.

Honestly, if you take that mascot, and try to compare it to yourself, maybe you are a nerd and jsut don't know it. Nobody is going to look at that and say, hey, it TACW. It's just a mascot, and I think it fits great.

For every second spent wondering if you can do something, you could spend 2 seconds doing it.

I personally think a "nerd" as you call it is very stupid, but that's my opinion. There's no such thing as a nerd, a geek, a murderer, a thief, a homosexual, a weirdo, or the like. Now, somebody may act like one, but surely no one are these things. They are negative, limiting, and stereotypical--like racism.

You may disagree but that is not the point. So, let me post something although

Obviously it is not complete, but clearly made angles are planned. Some of you may see sprites of it jumping, flipping backwards, croaking, etc. There are diagnols, front, and a back and side planned. So, you could probably use the thing for various animations, perhaps hopping across a page, bouncing around on the cursor and flipping if you click it. Not sure, if anyone wants a challege feel free to modify this, fix it up a bit, finish it, etc. :-)

I'd appreciate it anyhow...oh well there you go thanks for your time. I suggest not going with a nerd regardless if you like this frog

The frog you've done is certainly cool and that would be a lot of fun to incorporate into a little flash interface.

Regarding the nerd thing... it's not meant to be insulting in the slightest and I'm suprised to see such a negative reaction. Many people call themselves nerds, geeks and weirdos. I would hardly lump any of those descriptions in with homosexual, murderer or any racial slur.

Everyone has their "nerdy" times where they become obsessed with something. My friends and I call each other nerds all the time. We like computers, cartoons, video games and technology in general -- all undeniable traits of a nerd.

Look at it this way... what's a popular part of the nerd stereotype?  They grow up to be the smartest and richest people.  It's all in how you look at it.

I think we should all strive to never be nerdy, geeky, murderous, homosexual, weird, or abnormal. I think we should be who we are, healthy, self-controlled, and stable--stable, that is in, in constant growth, giving up the negative part of ourselves.

To consider, as you put it become "too obsessed with something" to not be negative, to me, is ignorance.

Thanks for the feedback on the frog, by the way. The sprites with the white dot on the mouth are tongue shooting sprites...the ones before them are diving sprites.

Hm, they could use some work.

This is ridiculous, and I disagree completely. If someone murders they are a murderer. If someone is homosexual they are a homosexual, just as someone else is a heterosexual. EVERYbody is a weirdo in someone else's eyes. These are just terms we use to differentiate between groups of people, human nature. And not all of them are negative. I don't believe they are 'limiting' either. I can be a lot of these 'terms' that society sees me as. And stereotypical? People thrive on stereotypes, whether you like it or not. And I hardly think that 'nerd' is offensive to anyone in this forum - and if it is then they should probably lighten up a bit and take these "insults" less seriously.

I am proud to say I'm a nerd.  And I think ISTVAN's mascot is the best yet.

I hate pride as well, pride is absolutely destructive, which is probably why following it you profess nerdism (please don't laugh at my use of the term "nerdism", it's quite valid regardless if I "made it up").

I love this one. The floating pixels represent Pixel Art (of course) and the fact that they are floating says that we rule Pixels!  Maybe not as evil.

The nerdy feel represents the knowledge of the whole community and individual wise.

Although "Art" is represented by the piece itself I have a small suggestion. I'm not sure what the hats are called but I think it would look pretty spiffy if the PJ (that's what I called this little nerdy dude  ) had one of those hats that artists usually wear. If you know what I mean.

I think he's a fair way to being geeky enough. I think more emphasis on being artistic would help, and the hat would be a nice touch, imo.

Well by my 'I am proud to be a nerd' statement, what I really should have said was 'I don't mind being called a nerd' or 'I am blase when it comes to being called a nerd' or 'I don't care if someone puts me in the nerd category' - basically - who cares and it is not an important enough issue to worry about. Man.

Barret is the word you're looking for ;) (It's French  )
--
I think the Barret idea is very good.
You could make it into on of these "army" barrets (I can take a pic of my dads if anyone requests) and make the emblem attached onfront of the barret in something related to pixels/pixel art or pixel joint.
For example: A fancy gold emblem resembling the lettres "P" & "J" as reference of Pixel Joint.

Ooh. I think I want to take back every word I've said in my previous posts in this thread. I love the geek. Not sure what made me change my mind, but I can totally see the geek in every corner of this page, being a mascot. Man, it's a great mascot.

I don't mind at all being referred to as a geek, as I know I am not. I have in a humorous manner claimed to be educating myself to be a geek, as I am studying computer stuff (and the fact that I'm one of the 15 girls on a school of 300 students makes the stereotypical thing funnier). I am soon to be a fully educated geek

The barret thing might be a nice touch to his artistic sides. Maybe we could use the geek as being a picture next to every "PixelJoint" logo on the site, and have him being random in every picture. I mean, when you press F5 the site would look exactly the same, but another dressup of the geek would show up. And the barret (with more "artist stereotype" clothes) could be one of the pictures.

I still like the idea of a weapon in his hand though. The true geek form of him, with the geeky clothes, could have a cursor in his hand, while the artisic geek could have a brush. There could be a magical geek (looking like a wizard) with an old branch as a weapon.

Ideas, all ideas.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everybody else.

Do you think this because I do not naively give in to anything someone considers fun?

Some people think it's fun to make fun of people, some people think it's fun to have sex, rape, steal, or murder. Clearly one must not be naive to these deceptive claims, so why am I negative? Is it because I conflict with your ego? Why then are you so defiant to let me inform you of where I see problems?

Do you know that in the Spanish language, there are two words for "to be"? One is a definitive "are" and another is a conditional. For instance, one's mood would use estar while one's physical body's heritage would use "ser".

Why does it make me negative and a downer to point out that you are calling someone a nerd in regard to their negative quality, attempting to make them look like a hideous joke for your own amusement, fun, and laughter, and for me to inform you that such things do not have to be? If we would, as a people, come together and purge such labeling from out among us, we can transcend stereotypes...and, anyhow, pride is absolutely atrocious, as the member who responded to my post even reworded his message, so I assume he agrees with me.

Clearly it is not so negative, and so far I've made very few posts challenging your egos...maybe about two in total, therefore you are overreacting and making unfounded claims. If you made two posts challenging horrible things you are seeing in a community and someone began calling you the most negative person in sight, you too would feel unjustly persecuted...and I didn't call anyone negative, anyhow, did I? I believe I referenced pride and labeling as negative. Therefore, you are being even more unfair.

Okay, I have expressed enough. I await your response if you'll make one for me, but no need to hold your breath I am willing to walk away, but that doesn't mean I retract.

It hits a spot because I know self-righteous people who will call people insults as a means of trying to control them. You are perpetuating the same stereotype of an unhealthy, glasses wearing, freckled, suspenders wearing, freckled person who seems to be stuck in some sort of uncontrolled mindframe that, not only has the "geek" and "nerd" thing been way overused on the Internet, but the entire thing is overused other places as well, is hardly much of a mascot seeing as how other people use it, I'm sure, and it lacks basis.

Where did the whole "nerd" charade come from? Do you know who designed it and for what reason? It's a form of ridicule, and people who tell me I am being too serious and I need to enter into their same down-spiraling, sick and twisted sense of racial, stereotypical humor are the same people who will laugh if an overweight person were to fall down the stairs, break her legs, and have her butt crack hanging out as she laid on her belly in pain. It's the same people who simply perpetuate idiotic, senseless, cruel jokes in the name of humor, judging people by their activities, their outward appearance, their faults.

Instead of being cliche, why not show some effort for reform? I do not care who you are or where you come from, because I know where your soul comes from, and YOUR spirit--the same place as mine, and I look forward to seeing earth in its better days, and that includes disregarding the world's view of what makes me fun or boring--which is why someone just used profanity at me, because they're in a lost and delirious state of rebellion whereby they lack self control and responsibility--attempting to fraud the universe of accountability for the sake of the "if it feels good do it" philosophy, which is basically a, "if it feels like death then die" philosophy...I'm more of a, "if it feels like death, kill it" kind of one.

Can't we be more creative than a nerd? And you know very well I could care less if you want to use my frog or not, so if anyone is planning to lash out like a demon again using more cuss words with me, ridiculing me for my submission, perhaps you should also realize that I never ridiculed any of you for perpetuating the stereotype of a nerd or geek, I simply believe you have the power to grow and transcend and live a more peaceful, less judgmental and animalistic life.

Ok, look, some people might use it to try to control people or whatever, but you wanna know something, we arn't those people. It is simply and idea and everyone liked the idea until you had to bring up all that crap. If you don't like it, say you don't like it, tell what you would like, and hear what people have to say about that.

Truth: Lighten up or leave. Stay on topic or leave. This is not the place to hold a debate on that issue. This is a place for pixel art. Post some pixels, get critiques, post critques. Personally, I like the whole "nerd" title. I am a nerd, a geek, a social outcast from time to time, and you know what? I f**king love it! I am comfortable in my station in life even if you are not.

Anyways, let this be a completely non-facist kind of warning: stay on topic or leave.

For everybody else: please disregard Truth's statements and carry on with the mascot topic.

Alright I"ve read through the other suggestions. I liked the one by Panda Planet about having the emblem of PJ on the berret. That would be sweet!

Imagine this: A nerd (representing the knowledge) with a berret (representing the art atmostphere) emblemed "PJ" in gold letters (representing Pixe Joint, of course), in his right hand he holds the cursor (representing the computers and technology) and in his left hand he uses the power of Pixel Art to make the pixels float above his hand (representing the Pixel Art). I think it's just ... wonderfull. [sobs] It's beautiful!

Why are you gonna leave this topic, TAC-man? No reason, no reason. Stay.

Anyway...

I hope ya don't mind me trying my pitiful hand at your Idea, Zoomrix.

Just a rough line and color. Note the see-speak-hear no evil pixels on the shirt.
He turned out a bit more beatniky than nerdy, I think, but w/e.

I am offended by the term "beatniky" .. can't we do without labels? Or how about "Poetically inclined"?  Just kidding. I think it looks pretty cool. One thing I might suggest is widening those legs a bit. Give him some non-skin tight pants.

That looks sweet! I can't wait to see what you will do for the power source that's holding those pixels together. (the part that is gray right now). Maybe thi could be a community project. Have a anyone that wants to try and make this mascot. Then we can post it up for people to show. But pick just one for the official mascot that will be posted up on the main pages.

That's what proves we are nerds (most of us anyway), the pixels are RGB.  LOL

Wow that truth person was a real arse. Oh sh*t I used a derrogatory term. Oh sh*t I swore. f**k. Haha. Oh sh*t I laughed.

Aaanyway. I really like Zoomrix's summing up of the elements of the mascot, I think its perfect. I also really like zachriel's idea of the mascot in random poses and things when the site renders. I'm all for it. So what, now do we have a bit of a trial and error sesh until we get a mascot we all like the look of?
