Hello guys, new collab proposal:

A pj tileset

I was thinking of an rpg style topdown tileset (where you can see the front side of every thing too)

Rules:
Every tile you make should fit next to at least 1 of the existing tiles.
16x16 tiles

If this becomes a succes we could do a platformer tileset later on too.

What we need for it is a nice palette. Sadly the only one I can think of is arnes, but Id prefer more than 16 colors (32 maybe). Other existing old school palettes are all so.. old school :p.
Does anyone know about other cool palettes, ang do people like my idea?

I've always found platformer tilesets a bit easier to make than RPG ones, but maybe that's just me :o... Also, I don't think that just making a tileset is quite enough; we'd have to make a bunch of mockups as well to keep people interested in the project, or something else that seems like a goal to reach. I don't think making an actual RPG from the tiles would really work all that well, though, because honestly that is way too much work and also relies too much on the one person who may or may not volunteer.

also I think everyone should make toucans

EDIT: What we could do, @ that tileset idea again, is do something along the lines of this: http://nifflas.ni2.se/forum/index.php?topic=1647.0
In that, there's already a Knytt Stories level set up, just all of the graphics are placeholders. We could do something similar to that, just maybe on a larger scale in order to make it collaborative instead of a competition.

also I still think everyone should make toucans

Like Isocity, The Joint and the other proyects like these. I was thinking in something like:

Iso Parking (for vehicles with isometric pixel art)
Pixel Garden (a place for any kind of pixeled vegetation)

Do you have another idea?

I've had the idea for a TCG in my head for a while.
And I know it's already been suggested.

But I think if planned out and properly executed it could be done.

The beauty about trading card games is the cards are usually made by multiple artists.
So the coherency of style doesn't have to be there.
And this is something that could be done and made into a multiplayer lobby based game very easily.
Probably the easiest of all games to make.

Only hard part about them is coming up with the rules and overall balancing.

But I seriously think it's something that could be done.
Specially if it was at like 100x100 sized canvas.

lol def and life... should be ATK and DEF

I really like the trading card game idea! I would be into it

also, I had this idea-
OK, proposing a MASSIVE project that most people on the site don't have the dedication or time to put into it, but, would like to throw it out there anyways. I know when I was at pixelation there was a community project called King Of Spriters, where everyone made a fighting game character and a portrait for their character. What I would like to do is work with whoever else would like to and compile an actual full fighting game. I KNOW how big this is and how many people will roll their eyes at this, but I just think it would be cool if even 9 or 10 artists could bust out a complete sprite set for at least one character each, with things such as the stages going to whomever wanted to make them. Just an idea. I already created the first character I am working with. His name is goober and he is in my Gallery, if you want an idea of the kind of stuff I am working with. okthnx!

I have once designed a game that was made to be used in some browser based thing. As usually I stuck on the programming. However, I still should have all my design documents, rules, mathematics, balancy stuff and even a lot of cards and features somewhere on a computer. I suppose they sadly are in Dutch, so if we want to go with that idea ill have to translate the general idea.

Anyway, for a TCG there are 2 options. Going with something online (cool, everyone can join in, but it requires a lot of programming, preferably a lot of players, and an meganism of playing against each other.(Real time? or you do your turn, and the other player does his turn tomorrow?)

Or going with real printed cards. How do you administrate that? Who prints that? If everyone prints their own cards there is no use for the trading, noone to play with, etc. etc.

I did do extensive studies in game design stuff for that game btw. Possible options is going with a non trading card game (half as cool, but ok) too.
However, id really love to see some cool online game. Which is hard to acchieve, and is probably a reason to not start on this project.

Ill talk to you about it privately, it seems there is way to much to say about this for one post.

Did anyone ever play might and magic VII? There was a great cardgame you could play where you had to like, destroy the other player's tower, or bring yours up to 100, and cards could either build up your defenses, hurt the other players tower, or raise yours. You could only use cards if you had enough resources for that kind of card. You can play a clone of it on gemtree.com somewhere, it was called ants. It would be cool to make a pixel version of that. Maybe you should play it to get the idea, it's actually really fun.

I want to make the TCG pixel art related.
You have to pick a pixeler "hero" and you recieve the starter deck for that persons artwork.
Each pixeler is battling each other with their creations, but since it's a TCG they can use other artists minions.

We could have it like magic the gathering where you play cards that can effect gameplay.
Such as like a jpeg card, or like AA'd for buffs and stuff.

Depending on how much the card game is like Magic: the Gathering...
http://www.magicworkstation.com/
Magic Workstation is a nice free program that's not that difficult to load your own custom card database into, and although it's kind of glitchy it's still one of the best programs out there for playing card games online.

This can be done, and it would only take 30 temporary dedicated pixelers.

10 pixelers per faction
3 factions - RED, GREEN, BLUE
1 artist, 4 creation cards/per entry 64x64 canvas.
40 creations/per faction
150 cards total.

This is not including the technique cards.
This is just covering all the attacker type cards.
I've decided to ditch the "3 artist" rule, now we're taking the reigns as leaders in combat.

The cards in between can be anyones not necisarly yours

Adriprints - you have to be the winner from the previous challenge to get to propose the new challenge.

How about a collaberation of animals. I am interested in creating a Card Game as well and am basing it around animals. A bigger image is better. Animals can and should be creative, but realistic, and I am perticularly looking for:

An Eight-Winged Hawk, Octohawk
Pterodactyl
Flying Tree
Rideable Wolf
Spineless Porcupine
Megalodon

Woah that's an awesome Idea in my opinion. I think it could be something like maybe Yu-gi-oh or if it's going to be like the areas should be named using some kind of pixel names like for example the graveyard could be (Dead Wips or maybe Dead art)

A Pokemon challenge that way people who can not do isometric pixel art can join in and it easy to think of:

  • non-isometric
  • Unlimited Colours
  • 64x64 to 80x80 pixels
  • You can do them like this  or this  if you want

How about because we're dealing with the modern age, you can use unlimited colors. But restrict the size to 64x64 to 80x80 pixels. You should do the map view (mini view), battle view, and card.
Let's not do pokemon though, let's make new creatures.

good idea, wips could be fused together or something to make a powered up pixel or something. and when they die the pixel art needs revision.

exactly, put them in PNG format.
For fun, let's each do a test one.
Small (map) view: 32x32
Larger view: 64x64

I'll make one sometime. Someone can just put them together with Game Maker or something.

Or lets be lazy and not do it at all.

Do a miniature 16x16 version.
You know, like where you'd see it on your inventory of pocket monsters (aka pokemon).

I have a great idea for a collaborative project!

What you do is start by making a pixel art project and post it here.

Another person adds a frame around the pixel art, another does the same,Etc.    make the worlds largest pixel frame.

Rules:no one frame can be more than 50 pixels thick.

Keep going!

I like that idea of a card game of some sort, something you could play in the end would be pretty cool.

An idea of my own is one straight from grade 7 art class, only in pixel-form.
Basically you have sections of workspace allotted to artists, and one by one an artists creates an image, but the artists that follow can only see the outer few pixels of the image before them and thus have to imagine their own image continuing off of that.
I'm relatively new here so for all I know this has been done, repeatedly, but if not it could be fun to do in pixel form.
you could set some themes for a bit of continuity or just have at it to make a fun mess.
Could make some pretty humorous creations, especially if you make a character and divide each section into different body parts.

Only real problem I could see is if someone stalls on their work and the people after them have to wait.. or people posting their work prematurely and spoiling it.

EDIT: ya, definitely not new, something similar is mentioned on the first page lol.

I like the idea of seeing only the outer pixels. I also think that making it a character would be more complicated, not to mention cliche... if it was a different theme, or even no theme altogether, it would be pretty awesome.

There could always be a collaboration to pixel something in the game and watch style. A game and watch frame can be created and the screen could be the canvas area.
It might be cool to see how people will deal with the extremly limited animation along with trying to make extremly smooth and curved shapes not common in pixel art.

Hi,

I am not a pixel artist but I love pixel art. I am a web developer, frontend and backend and I seriously want to create a game. I have started a little online multiplayer RPG project here:

Django rpg project

I have the code running, you can chat with others and the screen is moving like in Zelda 1. I realize the scope of this project is way too big just for myself. I would like to collaborate at any level with artists, maybe to reduce the scope of the project, transform it, or do something completely different (turn based game, card game, board game).

Hi All,

I am new to the pixel art creation - well new again ;)

I use to make games and stuff on my vic-20 and work with computer since then and now I am back into having fun with computer art!

My first pixel art was a spaceship - to make a simple space ship scrolling game - you can check it out here :
http://www.ponnuki.net/?p=352

in my next project I would like to start a mini game with 1 character and some backgrounnd (yeah zelda like) andI would need to use some pixel art - which I am not good at yet. It's just for fun so there is no copyright involve it's really only o experiment to make a simple game. It will be buil in processing.

What I need is simply a character that is a animated gif that loop as if the character is walking and then some tiles for grass - mountain - water - then later tiles for the in between land and water and grass and mountain ...

It doesn't need to be new art - it could be an old project you created before and that you don't mind it being used in a video game prototype or anything really.

I am also open to create some other type of game prototype like scrolling shooters and other stuff like that ~ I am no expert but I have been learning processing for few month now and it's starting to be interesting ;)

let me know if anyone is interested!

I've got an idea. How about kind of a collaborative comic book? Someone could come up with a basic outline for a plot, then each person could add one or two panels after the previous person's. What's really cool about this the fact that I've never seen a pixel art comic book before, and that besides the art, everyone could help a little with the story, kind of like a TBRPG. What do you think?
Antymatter - that could actually come out really cool. Maybe it could be a Last Supper sort of thing.

let's do the comic book in B/W so it seems like it could be for an older Mac computer. Also, we should only be able to see the last panel, so it has sort of an Exquisite Corpse feel to it (look it up if you don't know what i'm talking about).

If we did it exquisite corpse style, it would be kind of disjointed, wouldn't it?  I was thinking of it actually being like a real comic book.  I don't know if I really like the B/W idea much either, but a limited pallet would give it character.  Maybe something like 64 colors max?

So, would RGBs look something like this?

What about a project, kind of like the joint, but instead, you use buildings in a city. It could be any building you want, and you can place them in allocated lots. Just a suggestion

Does anyone know about other cool palettes, ang do people like my idea?

lol, I am so unoriginal.

I'm not very prominent on PJ, I'm more interested in programming, personally. Only trying to learning pixel art to actually make something reasonable for that.

I rather like this idea, but I don't think it'd work too well if each person made a tile or two of a topdown tileset, there would be too many conflicting stylistic choices.
I think that it'd give people much more freedom (arguably, of course) if people contributed tiles for a rougelike. As in, there would be one tileset with tiles, so people can make a wall tile or a floor tile, or whatever, to actually make maps; and there would be another tileset with characters and monsters, etc.
If people wanted to, they could then animate things and go all out, other people could link tiles with intermediary tiles and whatnot.

Of course, I don't have enough experience to say what palette would work, but that's my two cents is all.

Map Icons

I would love to see some Map Icons developed by this group. I work in the GIS department (mapping) for City Gov't where I live and I have developed some mixed raster/vector icons. We are putting together a new foundation at work, developing a new system and we are working on creating new icons and such... I'm pushing to develop some themed/unified map icons for the various things we map.

Would anyone else be interested in this kind of challenge?
