Hi everyone,

I lurk here almost every day but don't post much.

I'm very new to pixel art (and art in general) Can I please have some brutal C+C on my pixels of Rachael here from Blade Runner.

Here's my ref.

I can take hard criticism! I'm here to improve so you don't have to be nice - fire away!

what style are you going for? realism which matches your ref? or pop art which works better with the style you have going? (i think you should go for pop art, its simple, clean, colorful, and fun) here are some examples.
ex 1
ex 2
ex 3

it dosen't have to be bright and happy (which alot of pap art does, for example you could do something like this: ex 4 but just use darker colors.

If you'd rather go realism, which would fit the mood of your ref, then the first thing you want to do is get the anatomy of your piece as correct as possible.

what you want to do is compare your piece to the ref and be as pickey as possible. for example.
her right eye is too small
her hair is too collapsed (by only about 1 px) on the top right.
her ear is too sharp, and dosen't visually overlap her head enough.
you don't have her hair behind her head.
her hairline near her ear is too high, bring it down a bit.

but for a beginner, not bad. not bad at all. just keep us updated, and we'll keep helping out. Hope all this helps!

As far as pixelart portraits go, it is very nice: good colors and not too many of them, right contrast and shadows. No beginner mistakes like overdithering or too large canvas to handle.

If you want to futher enhance likeness, it is better to try what StepDragon said and if needed ask on forums which specialise on portraits. Pixels themselves are more than okay.
If you want to add things to form a piece it is a different task.

I see underlying grid. What was the process like? Have you put the grid on the ref? How you picked colors?

I think you have a great start.  I agree with what StepDragon said.  Also, working on the hair might point out tweaks that might be made on her face....at least that would be my next step.

Realism. I am actually a huge fan of abstract art, but I don;t want to use that as an excuse for not being good at art. Thanks for this comment BTW, I realised that my picture is too pop art-ish.

Will do. Thanks!

I drew a few reference lines on the original pic, and resized them down to 20% of the original size, and drew on top of that. It wasn't a full on grid, but just enough lines to work with.

Embarrasingly, the colours are almost as-is from the original picture using the colour picker, although I did tweak them slightly.

-----------

I'll tweak the proportions, taking everyone's comments into account, and I'll finish the piece to the best of my ability (or until I get stuck). After that I'll post it here again for dissection!

And thank you for the compliments!

Here's a quick edit:

Quickly roughed in the hair and mainly edited the eyes to give them more depth by adding more of the dark(black) and a couple reflections in the pupils.  Basically added more contrast and gave the illusion of bigger eyes..sort of like adding eye liner and mascara.

Jesus! That's nice.

I'll study it and do my best to produce something similar without actually copying anything.

Sorry that I still haven't updated; I've been on holiday with my partner. I'll be back home tonight so expect something in the near future.

... and by near future I mean 7 years. Sorry for the necro-post but I finally finished it!
