So here it is, I'm trying to make a icon so I can use as avatar, but I don't know what should I do with it. Can you give me some advices on how to proceed?
It's a planet, with a little moon tidaly locked to it. ![]() It has some clouds all over the place so I can be some more... real I think. The yellow in the upper right is the big desert. And the blue in the lower left is the ocean. The little moon has a vegetation that makes it somewhat red , and both, planet and moon have a little atmosphere. But yet, I need some advice in what to take out and what to add in this little piece. Edited by -noOb- - 17 August 2011 at 6:23am |

planets are usually only illuminated on the sunny side. The other side tends to fade to black.
The atmosphere follows the fade to black more gradually, since it's diffusing light. Moons generally have no atmospheres. My specific objections to this piece is the shading: the two bodies feel like 2D disks instead of 3D spheres. Check some references of planet photos, from actual telescopes and sci-fi films. Also, here's a really rough repaint. I got rid of some colors in your palette that looked really similar and were thus redundant, and added a bright highlight for the sunlit side. ![]() hope this helps a bit, Christina |

Hum... so I'll have to decide what style to use. If I go with something more cartoonish or something more realistic, where I'm worse. Should I use the black background? I wanted it to be more like a simbol, not a scenery.
I agree with you about taking out some colors. I need to work on that. Using less colors and combining them to form others. That would be good. I'll also try to make a bigger image after I finish this one. Anyway, sorry for being later, I was a little busy with college things. |

it's perfectly all right. Maybe you should make your next image small. Larger images tend to be easier to mess up. Make it small, and work with the restrictions. A very good pixelartist would be able to make a planet perfectly readable at 16x16 pixels. That's what you should aim for. Bigger isn't necessarily better :)
