Midnight update!
Image is 4x again, since no one complained the last time. Not sure on the proper etiquette yet...

I'm mostly done with my narcissistic version. I think I might "re-skin" it with a larger fro and different character if I have the time. Thanks for all the feedback on the much less finished version, though!

I'm pretty happy with how the 3d effect is shaping up, since this is my first ever spin animation. The lower half looks a bit like I'm snowboarding, though (I think the center of mass is slightly off).

@offwhite: Thanks a lot! Your animation is much better, though! I really like the finished version.
@Nate K: Your palette work is fantastic. It feels like it could be at the beginning of a retro video game (in one of those cutscene sequences).
@everybody: These are all great pixels. I feel like a complete noob now.

... I can already tell my 1920x1080 res is going to be a problem here.

i really, really don't think that passes as an afro. a jewfro isn't really an afro, it just looks kinda like one, and the hair in the piece doesn't even look like a jewfro. just give him a big poofy afro.

also, be aware of the size limitation for this challenge. you're a bit over 72x72.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I kind of realized it wasn't enough of an afro to work in the comp. If I do submit something, it'll be a "re-skinned" version with a real afro and a different character, but probably the same animation.

And I'm aware I'll have to crop. I just usually use a 48x80px panel for characters. This is still a WIP, so I figured it didn't matter while I was still using my chromakey color for the background...

So... do I submit Ms. Sun to the challenge, or do I submit her as a normal piece? Halp?

UM

Well, I'd say it would be fine to submit as a normal piece (crediting Graindolium ofc)
Might be stretching it for the challenge. If collaborative pieces were allowed, that could mean that pieces with 336 hours of work were submitted (as opposed to 168). Obviously slightly less went into this one, but I think we'd rather not set a precedent.

Erm, I have submitted it for the challenge, let's see what happens :/

Also, why would I credit Graindolium? :)

I don't think Mrmo should have any trouble submitting it as a challenge entry of his own credit.  He did the design, laid the groundwork. While yes, he did use the arms to a pretty direct degree, those were offered up as a suggestion crit - something somebody suggested that he add to help the piece. Though he could have changed the arms up a bit to play it safe, I do not fault him for using them - they were a great pose, and when you're still in the brainstorming process of making a piece and somebody offers a great idea it turns into a sort of "omg cannot unsee awezumness" situation.

I may be new here but I think Stickytape hit it right on the nose. The old saying goes, why fix what isn't broken..?

's the problem with edits, I guess. if someone sees what's wrong and makes an edit and offers this edit to the OP and the OP uses it for the finished piece, it's kinda hard to ... not use what is now fixed.. you know? especially small edits..

I hope that makes sense..

Oh, about the revolving sprite with the jew fro,

the center of mass is definitely off a tiny bit, I think the problem is when the front turns to the left it goes

"Whoop!"   to <--- that way a little.. then corrects its self and the rest of the animation is fine. OH the shoe on the right bugs me though as it returns to front, it seems to shrink in one frame, needs like, 3 pixels poking out more I thinnk. just a suggestion.

great job so far =) looks good ^^

Gotta stop tweaking! Added a bit of shading and detail, and fixed some bugs in the crumbling part.

Awesome entries.
Had some time to do this quickie between work and uni.

Let's see if I can find some time to actually finish this.

Afratlas, supporting the weight of the fro. Not the right size for the challenge but who cares, I'll post it separately!

Arrgh... this weekend was too hectic, and I never got a chance to reskin my character with an appropriate afro. Oh well, good luck everybody else!

Also, Graindolium, your turnover is fantastic! Though I'm sure you meant them as a joke, there is some really good work in them. Afroffiti - it's a new art form.

In before deadline, woo!
(by 54 seconds)

Yes, it looks like a totally ripped version of my Afro Duck, and yes, that was the point.  Makes my wife smile, so that was the goal.

You might get in trouble for that. They said it had to be an ORIGINAL character. You clearly ripped yours. Pretty sure that will not be accepted.

It's an original character.  Just not the most original design. All of the fro parts are redrawn with my patented afro poof pencil brushes, the nose eyes and bill just share the same characteristics (which, when dealing with afro'd waterfowl, is as acceptable as using the same sprite base/face for RPG characters, cmon!)

But yeah, disqualify it if you have to, I owed Surt and myself a companion to go with the ducky.

Oh, I'm not the judge. This is just from an outside point of view. I always thought that original meant not just re-doing a past project, but having a totally different concept. I don't know how the actual judges approach originality here. That's just how I would.

Hey, if it works, then kudos to you for recycling an old idea. I'm just saying...doesn't seem original in my opinion...
