Hi everyone!

I'm currently working on a colaborative romhack project, in which I am in charge of designing the secret final level. I've had some experience making pixel art before, but not much (we tend to use a lot of resources from other games and an archive of user submitted content).

Anyway, one of the things that I am doing for this final level is an opening cinematic sequence. One of the main things that happens is a portal/wormhole thing descends from above the screen and sucks the player into this dark stormy netherworld area. The wormhole is more or less a vector mask (I have the current "world" drawn on the top layer and the netherworld area on the layer beneath).

I've been trying to set up an aurora graphic to go around the wormhole thing. Here's what I've got so far:

I don't really know how to make it any better, and I have even less of an idea as to how I would go about creating 2 or 3 frames of animation. I was hoping maybe I could get some help or advice from real artists on this forum. Could anyone offer some insight?

EDIT: here are some other graphics from the level in question, just to give some idea of the aesthetic I am going for.


Note that while I did sort of draw all these graphics, understand that I used the graphics from ecco the dolphin as a base. The level is themed off of something from that game, so that's why it is how it is.
