It's a great start. I want to see bricks to see the depth effect you have going on with their 2 layers. I think your overhang need to be tweaked on the edges to make it look like it pops out. The illusion isn't quite there.

This looks clean and excellent. If you used reference photos for this, I would love to see them.

- Made a small edit on the door for fun, these tiles have potential :3-
![]() - I'd personally suggest adding more depth to the tiles , it's a bit flat :) - Edited by CraftyPixel - 22 March 2013 at 8:40pm |

Looks damn good. Have you thought about the window reflections?

Also, what about the railing/fence near the bottom? And the arches near the bottom?

craftypixel addressed an important point- the colors are very boring. Using realistic colors in pixel art doesn't usually lend itself very well. You actually have a better chance at reflecting realism with so few colors with more extreme and vibrant colors. Also keep in mind how much you want your tiles to match your reference photo versus how much you want your tiles to be visually interesting.
Lastly, the banding on the edges of the bricks is a huge eyesore. Mainly because it's a triple banding issue. ![]() |

@Etheric:
-Windows will have some sort of reflection effect eventually. -Railing will be added eventually. @Friend: -I was sort of going for the low saturation/washed out colour look. I think I'm generally pleased with it so far. -The banding was done there to make a strong distinction between the two different depths of brick. I'm not entirely happy with it. Could you suggest a remedy? Edited by 1luke1 - 25 March 2013 at 3:41pm |

Thanks for posting the reference photo. I think you did a nice transfer. I'm also interested in seing the railing done.
The center 2 windows on each floor, maybe flip? the inset square under the window? On the top floor with the 2 bars (in the photo) they are noticeable, but in the bottom row (in the photo) behind the railing they are not. I'm just wondering what it will do for the railings. I don't have a comment on the banding that was mentioned, but since the railing is a single color (gray), maybe you can try black for the railing to see how crisp the contrast ends up behind the railing. Then maybe compare it to the bricks, to see if you need to balance the image vertically.

I think the stones just lack some shades.

Maybe you could make them just a bit higher (like in your reference photo) and add some shadow that is matching the rest of the set.

Your picture seems a bit too clean to me.. First off, there are a couple of design cues that are in your referece image that don't appear in the work. I know you don't have to include everything, but some of them give more character to the building, such as the small brick ledges, and the accents on the windows.
Its also a bit too perfect. Rough it up a bit. Buildings of that style are usually a bit older and outside of culturaly historical cities, they usually are in a bit of disarray... All this added together can add more caracter and depth. Here's a quick edit illustrating a few of my points. Obviously these can all be refined, but I'm just getting the point across. ![]() |

I'm planning to add details like this as I progress.
Good ideas though, thanks. |

Hm. I'm not really a fan of the style, the outlines and muted colors make it feel rather flat.
But what it is objectively lacking, are a bunch of small details. The metal plates, the lights, the electric wiring, the parts where the mortar has been replaced. |

Slight update.
Some Suggestions or criticism would be great. I really have no idea what I'm doing. A lot of trial and error. ![]() |

I'm not feeling the flat, overcast lighting and colors. Try being a bit bolder with your color choices, in ways that might not even seem to work at first. Work in some shadows, and really iron down your form. One place you might want to look at in particular is the dock and the water. It's fairly hard to find negative space in this kind of perspective, so milk it all you can when you have the opportunity to draw a deep, dark ocean right next to detailed, slimy boards. I hope this helps.
