I am making a pixel based novel and I've made a couple of mech sprites for the novel. One is a bottom less body and the other is a bulky one which is a boss.

The first one is so cute!  I like both of them, and the shading is superb.

They look cool, I think the bigger one has light source problems.

It's relly hard for me to make out the arm details on the large one. I love the colors you used. Those are colours for all the brits out there.

They're shiny, they're cute and so on.

But they don't look functional. This really bothers me when making a picture of a mechanical object, such as a mech, when it doesn't look believable then it often doesn't catch interest. The shapes look like they were thrown together to look like a generic mech and then some blocks of color put down and nothing works together. There are no joints, most of the lines are messy and/or confusing, the shading just doesn't make any sense to me and all in all, it just doesn't look like it'd work.

Thanks for the comments. The lines are kinda jaggy, gotta work on that. Heh, I was too lazy to draw the big bold joints for it so I am gonna stick with the full body setup first. The first is a box shaped chest with a t hip combined and the other is more like a stand chest shape with no lower body at all. I just cut the corners diagnally to get the mechanical cube shape and attached the parts together. I am still learning more to design combat type mechs, that may take time. The shading is shaded by varying those hues of the shades and making the shading more contrasted.
