Pixel Joint Forum: Rank Themes, why U no art?

   I never really paid too much attention to this before, but this kinda disappoints me. http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/faqs_ranks.asp Why are most of them based on fighting? Why are we lacking artist and game related things? There's so much we could do!

Chronological: classicism, renaissance, impressionism, art nouveau, futurism, cubism, art deco, pop art, graffiti.

Game characters: Space Invader, Pacman, Mario, Sonic, BJ Blazkowicz, Cloud, Lara Croft, Master Chief, Wii Fit trainer, Creeper, Angry Bird.

Consoles: (arcade?) Atari 2600, Commodore 64, NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, PlayStation, N64, PS2, Xbox, Wii, (ouya? ipad?, not WiiU/PS4/Xbox1 to not favor any fanboys too much)

Art materials: fingerpaint, crayon, pencil, brush, ballpoint, marker, fountain pen, large brush, feather, palette knife, art supply box.

Pixel techniques: pixel, line, shape, color, form/shading, outline, dithering, anti-aliasing, palette unification, sel-out,

Programmers(by language)? Human evolution(amoeba -> homo sapiens)? Computer evolution (vacuum tube, punch card, ram, microchip)? Controllers from said consoles with perhaps the Steambox last? Just anything cool and somewhat more relevant. Name it, and I'll gladly do the pixelwork for all the ranks/titles.

	I think that would be great! I made a similar list a few months ago in the chatterbox, but it is impossible to find it again... Closest I got was this... I'd love to see these!

	Good idea. PJ did not start out as a true art site so that's just something that's never been touched since Ens made the icons for them.

	Yeah. They're a bunch of the pixel technique icons, for the rank themes. But I'm not too sure I like them. Pixel, Line, Shape, Color, Form, Outline, Dithering, Anti-Aliasing, Palette, Tileset, Motion. Or did you mean that I should post these in the WIP/Collab subforum?

	Oh, I see what you mean now. All those rank icons are 64x64 so I did not understand what these small icons were for. I don't know that adding more to the list would be OKd so if anything like this would be implemented it would be editing the existing 10 levels which is what PJ profiles now handle. Then which would be in and which would be out :/

	Wait what. The rank icons are 48x48, and there's 11 levels of them? At least according to this page: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/faqs_ranks.asp Is there an alternative ranking system I'm unaware of?

	Looks like 48x48 to me too.. I like the pixel theme. Specifically the outline, dither and palette ones. F was the hardest to understand for me, I did not guess the term myself. Perhaps go for a more blocky shape and less round shape? Straight edges? The C for color I find very ugly, though I understand you want it to be different from the P... Maybe some nicer rainbowy transitions between the 3 colors or a more pretty letter instead of this big blob? Speaking of big blobs, the S can probably be a nicer S too while still representing the shape concept. M for motion makes sense, except that we always call this Animation... Would it be really bad to have a second A? Or maybe drop the letters completely? The first two icons are not letters and that works fine too.. Just ideas, I am glad somebody is drawing this!

	Well, one thing i stumbled on is how do you show a very specific concept? Because generally the 'higher tier' pixel art does still implement the lower tier stuff. For Color I went with the basic RGB from the subpixels. The first four are a bit more abstract in general. Initially the Color one was just three subpixel stripes, but when I made a blob for Shape, I thought maybe this could work for the rest of the terms too, a round blobby letter incorporating the technique. Personally I like Form, Palette, Tileset and Motion the least. Ironically I can't get a nice looking form out of the F... Palette isn't really a good optimized cross-ramp palette but it does get the concept across. Tileset kind of clashes stylistically, and so does Motion to a degree. And yeah, maybe Motion should be Animation, but I do prefer having all unique letters.
