so Its been a long time since I pixel'd.
would love some C&C on what I could do to polish this up (incase it isn't clear, I'm going for a medical-bot thing, I.V. for right arm and vitals on chest) |

Maybe using the lower-brightness yellow to do some AA for the spotlight? You can also use the vertical lines of the curtain to "hide" the jump of pixels as the light widens. You did this at the bottom right side of the beam. Try seeing if that can be used more to hide the jaggedness this palette promotes.

I think you have a bit to many colours there, by the way. Looks very nice, however! Another update though: ![]() Added a micstand. I'm not sure what to think of it, but it looks kinda bad. |

Micstand(s)is not needed as it does not add to the story but its ok. Those things on the curtain are a fail.
Maybe the anxiety thingies need more emphasis for an easier read. Maybe the darkest blue? |

I'm using the exact four colours specified for Friendbot, and I was suggesting you AAed one of the ones from the palette you're using--the warm grey, which could be used for lower-brightness yellow. My bad in specifying that. Oh well!
Maybe having the mic stand come up from the center edge of the stage, so you have a nice line of symmetry down your image? I'm not sure about having too much stuff on the stage. Your call, of course. Keep up the good work! |

Shoot, I miscounted the colours. Sorry, Turnip!
I didn't think of using the grey to AA, too. Originally posted by jalonso

Yeah, I'm just going to get rid of the stand. Having the stand in the middle obscures the character too much and muddies things up, too. Here's another: ![]() I'm not a fan of what the AA does to the upper parts. It looks weird with how I have the outlines of the curtains in the light, where I can't AA it... if that makes sense... |

JackBreak, if jalonso is talking about the ties on the left/right, I agree, color's bad. The spotlight does not interact well with the shadows on the drapes, or the circular details on the top.
That's also not really how spotlights work, unless it's incredibly dusty -the circle where the rays hit the stage/backdrop should be much lighter than the triangle drawn to the source - if the latter is included at all. Finally, I think you could revisit his face and try to get more emphasis on it. Right now, the yellow spotlight draws the most attention, but that should really fall to the main character. Not trying to get you down, I think you're off to a good start. Also, the mic is a good addition imo, and definitely does add to the story. I'm against centering it - the piece is already very symmetrical and static, and it would make the 'bot harder to read. jalonso, of course. I'm considering friend bot developing anxiety, glitching out and assassinating people. I like working with limited palettes - picking them myself is paralyzing. |

I think it would be better to make an original character... a robotic Castle Crasher would honestly fit in the game just fine. And it could still be love themed.
Nice piece regardless, definitely submit it even if not to the contest. |

@Dastal, It's readable enough and looks great, perhaps use a bit more of the darkest colour in the shading.

I'm slowly working on a glitchbot. The background is gonna be psychedelic, but it's just green for now.
![]() MS Paint likes to mess up the color palette when working with gifs so I've had to use Paint.NET instead. I'm hoping the colours are still correct. |

![]() its not near being done, even in the sketching stages, but the idea here is that the robot here is sleeping and a thingy person (not sure if im gonna do a person or a creature thing) goes by. the robot will, still in sleep mode, raise up his gun and blast the person's head clean off. its pretty much focusing heavily on the part of assasing bot where it says it could kill you even in sleep mode ![]() i was also having trouble where to start with shading the transparent dome on the robot ![]() Edited by MasterSky - 08 July 2014 at 11:05am |

Had a go at this tonight, tried to draw Rush, the robot-dog from megaman, in a sort of Chibi style.
I've never drawn Rush nor chibi/cutesy style, so it's all new to me. This is were I ended up: ![]() (The puppy's pose is from an online tutorial btw) I'm not sure about the eyes and the rear-legs - they're supposed to have those huge round joints as well, but I think that would be too busy. But other than that, I think I just need clean up the lines and try my hand at some shading... |

Originally posted by Cetoke My first piece of work, I know it's sh*te, but oh well robots don't have feelings. ![]() Don't call your artwork sh*t, even if it is. It's a very bad habit to get into. It's practice. You've got good lighting and a variety of texture work. Do said textures all look good? Maybe not, but again, it's practice. Anything you try will always look bad at first. My main complaint is that it doesn't look very robotic. Also, try making some kinda background, even if it's very basic. edit: Happily carrying around a family, but then night falls.. ![]() Edited by 7heSama - 09 July 2014 at 4:32pm |

Hey,
got here because I'm coding a game and need to learn to draw fine pixel art for the graphics. This challenges seem to fit perfectly to do some practice combined with a nice competition. So this is "WIP" and my first pixel art here: "A small assassination robot with a poison sting is waiting for his victim..." ![]() Damn it, 4 colors is difficult Advice appreciated Greetings |

Ammul, the first thing you should do is work on your line quality. You can find tutorials online, but basically, your outlines should generally be the same width. For instance - the lowest leg has that blocky triangle, the lines on the bot's back are wider in some places, the guy's shoulder is lumpy, etc.
And yeah, 4 colors is definitely difficult. Try using some blue on the bot or tan on the target - it will give you more options for detailing and connect the two together. Hope I don't come off as harsh, I don't want to discourage you. You're off to a decent start. |

First of all, I think I'll continue this piece with the 4 colours of the challenge, even if it is harder (I guess painting with more than 4 will be a pleasure afterwards). At the moment, I am working with the tutorial I found here in the forum ("Topic: The Pixel Art Tutorial"). Here is the new WIP: ![]() -tried to work on the shoulder -the human legs should look more "moving" now -tried to add some shadows on the wall for the assassin bot -corrected the outlines a bit Maybe you can give me another piece of advice? Right now, I don't know what to do with the background (streets,pavement)... Greetings |
